Ends Over 34-Year State Title Drought

Hazelwood West Boys Track And Field made history May 25 at Columbia-Battle High School not only for the sport but also for the school

Hazelwood West wins their first State Track And Field title. The Wildcats join Hazelwood East, with six Boys State Titles,   and Hazelwood Central, with four. While West had not won a Girls State Track And Field titles Hazelwood East won five and Central won three.

Hazelwood West Boys scored 66 points in Class Five, finishing 17 points ahead to runner up Lee’s Summit North (49), 19 better than third-pace Columbia Rock Bridge (47) and 22 better than Jefferson City (44). The meet moved to Battle from Jefferson City High after an EF-3 Tornado damaged Adkins Stadium and Licklider Track on May 22 at 11:30 p.m.

Hazelwood West also won their fist state title in any sport since February 1985 when the Wildcats won state wrestling. That is 34 years and three months ago. Counting Softball in the fall of 1977, Hazelwood West has three state titles.

Junior Justin Robinson won three sprint titles, repeating in two and setting state records in two. Robinson ran the 400-Meter Dash in 46.3 seconds as he not only brake his own Class Five record in winning last year (46.93 seconds) but broke an All-Class Record of 46.81 seconds set in 2003 by Domenik Patterson, Jefferson City.

In winning his first 100-Meter Dash title Robins broke a Class Five Record of 10.59 seconds set in 2016 by Micah Brewer, Raymore Peculiar. While no records were set in the 200-Meter Dash Robins repeats with a winning tine of 21.96 seconds

Robinson anchored the winning 4×200-Meter Relay, joining juniors Brian Stiles and Aaron Holmes and senior Matthew Kassa in taking the title in 1:26. 44. Stiles took second to Robinson in the 200-Meter Dash (22.16 seconds) and the 400-Meter Dash (47.91 seconds. Holmes finished second in the 300-Meter Hurdles (38.29 seconds) while junior Charles Davis took second in the Shot Put (50’6”).

   HAZELWOOD WEST GIRLS took fourth place in the 4×100 Meter Relay (48.77 seconds).

McCLUER NORTH GIRLS fell four points short of taking home a state trophy. With 38 points the Stars took a fifth-place tie with Rock Bridge and ends up four behind Battle (42). Lee’s Summit North (86 points) won their fourth consecutive Class Five title, and sixth since 2006 Pattonville, a former Suburban North and now Red Pool rival of McCluer North, took second with 63 points and Ozark’s 43 points gave them third place

Seniors Kyra Perry and Kayla Perry as well as juniors Michelle Owens and Lauryn Taylor won the 4×200-Meter Relay in 1:40.28. Kyra Perry, Owens, Taylor and senior Mauriyoni Tate won the 4×100-Meter Relay in 47.63 seconds. Taylor won the 100-Meter Dash (11.97 seconds) while Owens took second in the 100-Meter Hurdles (13.97 seconds)

   McCLUER NORTH BOYS — Senior Kyran Lacy, junior Cetris Ivy and sophomores Romon Logan and Angelo Butts won the 4×400-Meter Relay (3:18.55) while the 4×200-Meter Relay took fourth place.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL GIRLS — Senior Danielle Frank Closed her prep career by winning the 200-Meter Dash (24.35 seconds) while taking third place at 100 Meters (12.12 seconds) and 400-Meters (57.42 seconds).

   CLASS FOUR — McCLUER won a State Girls and Boys event May 25 at Washington High, moved from Jefferson City. Sophomore Cheyenne Melvin won the Gils 400-Meterr Dash (57.12 seconds) while junior Michael Jenkins won the Boys High Jump (6’7”). Finishing second were sophomore Chelby Melvin, Girls 300-Meter Hurdles (44.83 seconds) and the Girls’ 4×100-Meter Relay (49.65 seconds).

   HAZELWOOD EAST GIRLS — Senior Arlydia Bufford, junior Chaya Dorsey and sophomores Alicia Smith and Sydney Martin won the 4×100-Meter Relay in 48.67 seconds.
