Inaugural Girls Wrestling Season:
Only 1 Class, But 4 Districts

Girls High School Wrestling in Missouri is underway with their inaugural season as the Missouri State High School Activities Association lists 165 high schools with girls wrestling teams.
Many of these teams are shorthanded or have as few as one girl wrestling on their team. According to Track Wrestling, there are 12 girls weight classes (in pounds) (103, 110, 116, 121,126, 131, 136, 143, 152, 167, 187, and 235). Compare that to 14 weight classes for the boys (106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, and 285).
This season the MSHSAA have only one class for Girls Wrestling and classes in future years the number of teams and wrestlers determine the number of classes. This season three Ferguson-Florissant District High Schools — McCluer High, McCluer North and McCluer South -Berkeley — and two Hazelwood District High Schools — Central and East — have at lest one wrestling girl. These five teams are among 35 that will compete in District Two, Feb. 2, 10 a.m. at Fort Zumwalt North and the top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the inaugural State Championships, Feb. 14-16 at Mizzou Arena, University of Missouri in Columbia.
McCLUER GIRLS INVITATIONAL – On Dec. 13, McCluer North finished third with 43.5 points while the host Comets finished fourth with 32. Northwest (Cedar Hill) won the meet (61) while Francis Howell took second (53.5). McCluer North Varsity winners include senior Kyra Perry (116), junior Paige Folkner (121) and sophomore Natalie Schaljo (131). McCluer North B Team sophomore Kayla Davis won (131-B) while McCluer freshman Kynia Holloway won 116-B.
BOYS WRESTLING — Thus will be the 89th season under MSHSAA sponsorship and there are four classes with four districts in each class. Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West and McCluer North are in Class Four, District Two at Wentzville-Holt; Hazelwood East and McCluer are in Class Three, District Two at St. Charles High and McCluer South-Berkeley is in Class One, District One at defending back-to-back State Champion Whitfield. Districts are Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. and Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. with the top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the 89th State Championships, Feb. 14-16 at Mizzou Arena.
GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING — This will be the second year the sport is two classes and qualifying is currently underway, since there are no district meets, and qualifying for the State Championships, at St. Peters’ Rec-Plex, ends Feb. 7, 2019. Only the top 32 qualifiers, plus ties, in all 12 events qualifies for state. Qualifying swimmers and divers from Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West and McCluer North will be in Class Two (Feb. 14-15) while state qualifiers from Hazelwood East, Incarnate Word Academy, Lutheran North, McCluer High, McCluer South-Berkeley and Trinity Catholic are in Class One (Feb. 15-16).
INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY has three swimmers and all three relay teams meeting state qualifying standards and are in qualifying position, as of Dec. 15. Junior Ellie Wehrmann, defending state champion in the 100- and 200-Yard Freestyles, leads IWA with the top ranking in the 200 Freestyle and 100-yard Backstroke, according to Direct Athletics. In the Rockwood-Marquette Relays, Dec. 1, Wehrmann swam the 200 Freestyle in 1:55.74 and the Backstroke in 1:00.43.
