North Tech, Hazelwood East To Host

Basketball Districts In February ‘19

North Technical High School has never hosted a District Basketball Tournament while Hazelwood East High School last hosted Districts in 2013 (Class Five, District Eight).

Coming on the Feb. 16-23 2019 period North Tech will host their first-ever District (Boys and Girls) Basketball Tournaments.

Meanwhile, during the Feb. 23-March 2, 2019 period Hazelwood East will host a Class Four District, instead of Class Five.

North Tech will host Class Three, District Seven, which is eight-teams and Tech is among four North County high schools competing including Lutheran North, McCluer South-Berkeley and Trinity Catholic. Also coming to North Tech are three St. Louis Public Schools — Collegiate School of Medicine-Bio Science, Soldan International Studies and Charles Sumner — and St. Charles-based Blessed Philippine Duchesne. All eight teams will play in Boys and Girls Basketball and will play in the first round.

Hazelwood East will host Class Four, District Six, with six Boys teams and seven Girls Teams. Hazelwood East will compete in Boys and Girls Basketball against Clayton, Jennings, Normandy (Collaborative), Riverview Gardens and University City. The top two boys’ teams will have first-round byes while the girls, with Rosati-Kain in the field, will only have the top-seeded team getting a bye in round one.

Elsewhere in Class Four McCluer (boys and girls) and defending Girls State Champion Incarnate Word Academy will be in District Seven, at St. Charles West. In Class Five, all five-team boys and girls districts except for District Five Girls (which has four), Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West are in District Six at Francis Howell Central while McCluer North is in District Five at Webster Groves, which are the defending back-to-back Boys State Champions. There will be no district games for Classes Four and Five on Feb. 27, 2019 while the winners from Class Five, Districts Five and Six meet in the March 6, 2019 Sectional at St. Charles West..

Finally, North County Christian School Boys and Girls Basketball teams will close 2018-19 in the Missouri Christian State Athletic Association Tournaments Feb. 13-16, 2019 in Joplin, Mo.

   McCLUER NORTH Boys and Girls teams are unbeaten prior to Dec.19 when the Girls put their 6-0 season start on the line at home against Jennings. McCluer North Girls will spend the Christmas break in Jerseyville, Ill., to play in a tournament at Jersey Community High. The Stars will play against Troy-Triad Dec. 27, 4 p.m., Carrolton Dec. 28 at 12 noon, Alton Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. and a Dec 29 game, time to be determined pending results. Last year at Jerseyville, the Stars were 2-2.

McCluer North Boys head to the Christmas break with a 7-0 record, with two tournaments ahead on their schedule. The Stars close out 2018 with a return appearance to the Coaches versus Cancer Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-30 at the Meramec Campus of St. Louis Community College; then opens 2019 with a return to the Denver Miller Tournament, Jan. 8-11 at Kirkwood High. Last year the Stars were 1-2 in both tournaments.

Leading the way for McCluer North Girls include sophomore Samya Johnson, 13.5 points per game and nine blocks, junior Michelle Owens, 36 steals and 20 assists, and .sophomore Madeleine Pinkston, 36 rebounds. North Star Boys Leaders include senior A’Tavian Butler –19.4 points per game, 51 rebounds and 22 assists — and senior Mekai Ray, 22 assists and 16 steals.
