American National Baseball Leads SLABA Varsity North Division

American National Varsity Baseball is scheduled to wrap up their 2009 schedule July 15 and the Eagles, prior to July 14, have a 21-10 overall record and is 7-1 in the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association, leading the Varsity North Division by two games over Eagles 18 Graser.

Prior to July 14 American National Varsity has won 10 of their last 11 games and won seven in a row from June 27 to July 3. The Eagles have scored just over five runs per game while giving up just over four. The Eagles have played in five tournaments so far and have a combined record in tournaments of 118.

Prior to July 14 Zak Larkin is batting .472, has a .577 on-base percentage, is .500 in slugging, walked 13 times and stolen nine bases. Robert Wright, Stephen Franzen and Mike Fisher each has scored 19 runs, Wright has 28 hits including 24 singles while Franzen has driven in 25. Jake Spies has two of the team’s four home runs but has walked 15 times.

Bryan Belter has started eight games prior to July 14, competing six, is 6-1 with a 1.41 earned run average with 68 strikeouts. Geoff Nesbit has 163 put outs while Zach Burnett has 40 assists.
American National Varsity is currently coached by Bill Becher.

JUNIOR VARSITY — American National is 3-9 in SLABA games and 10-20 overall, prior to a tournament played July 10-12 in Evansville, Ind. In three prior tournaments American National had a record of 6-7. American National has a pair of games at Hazelwood YAA, July 20 against Stallions 18 Aulbe and July 21 against Eagles 18 Elder.

Prior to July 10 Kyle Manis is batting .474, with a slugging percentage of .561 and an on-base percentage of .508. Ryan Crandall has 102 plate appearances, scored 26 times on 32 hits including 29 singles, has stolen 16 bases and assisted on 50 put outs as well has contributed to 11 double plays. Justin Harms has walked 16 times but has driven in 24 runs while Brandon Thiel has 64 put outs.

Brett Humphries has 24 strikeouts Greg Viehman coaches the junior varsity.

JUNIOR — Prior to playing a tournament in Evansville, Ind., July 10-12, American National juniors are 9-5 in SLABA games and 12-8 overall. Mark Hahn coaches the junior team
Prior to July 10 Arsalaan Alvi was batting .476, was .541 in on base percentage, scored 21 runs, had 30 hits including 27 singles, walked 10 times and stolen 12 bases. Brad Ridings also scored 21 runs and had 30 hits but had a .618 slugging percentage with 21 singles, seven doubles, a triple, a home run and has 21 runs batted in. Drew Moran, who also has seven doubles, Robby Aubuchon, who also has a home run, and Tyler Branneky each has two triples.

In fielding, prior to July 10, Ridings has assisted in 35 put outs while Matt Hawn has made 103 put outs. In pitching, prior to July 10, Brendan Zoll is 3-1, completed three out of five games he has started with a 1.46 earned run average and has struck out 37 batters. Branneky, who has started six games, and Brett McDonald each have three wins.

SOPHOMORE — Prior to July 12 American National has an 18-17 overall record, 10-8 in SLABA games and in five tournaments have won eight games while losing seven (actual tournament results were not available). Lance Hartwig coaches the sophomore team.

As of July 11 Oday Alyatim was batting .449, slugging .806, an on base percentage of .522, has 44 hits including eight doubles, three triples, seven home runs and has driven in 31 runs. Duane Johnson has scored 36 runs, has 32 singles, eight doubles, two triples, 14 walks, has stolen 18 bases and has 17 put outs. David Lindsay has nine doubles, three triples, 14 walks and five assists while Sean Schollmeyer has walked 17 times.

In pitching, prior to July 12 Brendan Fosclick has started nine games, completed six with a 5-4 record while striking out 61 batters while Johnson has a 2.90 earned run average.
