IWA Volleyball Plays In 2

Tournaments, Starts at 8-5

     PREP NOTES — Incarnate Word Volleyball has played at least 13 matches before Labor Day and, as a result, are 8-5 going into the Thursday, Sept. 6, 6 p.m. home match against Hazelwood Central.

After opening Aug. 24 with a two-set home win over Ritenour IWA won four matches and lost two in the Aug. 25 Visitation Tournament. All Viz Tournament matches went two sets each. IWA defeated Francis Howell North twice, Ladue and Rosati-Kain while losing to Lindbergh and the host Vivettes, which the Red Knights host Sept. 11 (Patriot Day) at 5:30.

Following a two-set home win over Westminster Christian Academy on Aug. 29 and a three-set loss Aug. 30 at St. Francis Borgia IWA played in the Edwardsville, Ill., Tournament and were 2-2. On Aug. 13, IWA defeated Farmington and Chatham-Glenwood in two sets each. On Sept. 1, the Red Knights lost a three-setter to Normal University High and a two-setter to Francis Howell High.

   CROSS COUNTRY — Incarnate Word took second place Aug. 31 at the Lutheran St. Charles County Cougar Invitational in St. Peters. IWA scored 35 points, three more than team champion Bowling Green did, with 32. Four of the seven participating runners finished in the top 10 including sophomore Elyssa Toal (third-22:48.72), junior Helen Demarcantonio (fifth-22:59.29), sophomore Eden Toal (seventh-23:04.66) and sophomore Ellie Vazzana (eighth-23:37.61).

PAUL ENKE INVIATIONAL — Hazelwood Central will host the Paul Enke Cross Country Invitational Aug. 15 at Sioux Passage Park. All three Hazelwood School District high schools — Central, East and West — along with Incarnate Word and McCluer are on schedule to participate.

   BOYS SOCCER — TRINITY CATHOLIC was 3-0 in August as the Titans defeated St., Charles West 2-1 on Aug. 27, McCluer 8-1 on Aug. 28 and O’Fallon Christian 5-2 on Aug. 30 to open Archdiocesan Athletic Association Small Division play. After playing MICDS on Sept. 4 the Titans host an AAA Small game Saturday, Sept. 8, 12:45 against Lutheran St. Charles County.

Junior Austin Franklin has 19 shots and six goals including three against O’Fallon Christian and two against McCluer. Sophomore Jimmy Doherty has five assists including four against McCluer. Senior Cory Schonhoff has seven saves including five against St. Charles West.
