Hazelwood, Ferguson-Florissant Sports

Scramble Into 4 Suburban Color Pools

For the first time since the Hazelwood and Ferguson-Florissant School District High School sports teams started competing against each other, the St. Louis Public High School Athletic and Activities Association are separating the three Hazelwood teams (Central, East, West) and two of the three Ferguson-Florissant teams (McCluer High, McCluer North) from competing against each other in most conference sports competition.

The SPHSAAA are scrambling the 31 high schools (28 in St. Louis County, three in Jefferson County) into four color pools (Yellow, Red, Green, Blue) in 17 sports, with Boys and Girls Track as well as Boys and Girls Cross Country each counting as one sport. Boys and Girls Cross Country is in the Yellow Pool and the 29 teams will meet in the All-Suburban championships Oct. 6.

IN FOOTBALL Hazelwood Central, East and West along with McCluer North and McCluer will still be in the Suburban XII North and Riverview Gardens will be in the league, too. Hazelwood Central is undefeated in winning four straight Suburban XII North titles and two straight SN Conference titles.

   HAZELWOOD WEST — Softball, after going 40-5 and winning two straight undefeated Suburban XII North titles, will play this season in the Red Pool and will compete against Fox (Arnold) Kirkwood, Mehlville, Northwest (Cedar Hill), Parkway Central, Parkway West, Pattonville and Webster Groves. Girls Soccer, after winning four straight Suburban XII North titles, will be in the Green Pool competing against Suburban XII North Rivals Hazelwood Central and McCluer North, as well as Affton, Clayton, Parkway North and Ritenour. Boys Soccer, which also won four straight Suburban XII North titles, will be in the Red Pool and will compete against Affton, Clayton, Fox (Arnold), Northwest (Cedar Hill), Parkway Central, Parkway North, Parkway South, Parkway West, Pattonville, Ritenour and Seckman (Imperial)

Hazelwood West will also compete in the Green Pool in Boys Basketball, Boys Swimming and Diving, Girls Volleyball and Boys and Girls Tennis. Other Red Pool Sports include Girls Swimming and Diving, Baseball and Wrestling while the ‘Cats are in the Yellow Pool in Girls Basketball and Track And Field.

HAZEWOOD CENTRAL — Boys and Girls Basketball, which won Suburban XII North titles and were Class Five State Quarterfinalists last season, will each compete in the Yellow Pool and both will play against Webster Groves but no other common opponents. Central’s Boys will also play against Jennings, Lafayette, Rockwood -Marquette, Parkway South and Ritenour. The Hawk Girls will also play against Hazelwood West, Kirkwood, Parkway Central and Parkway North.

Hazelwood Central will also compete in the Yellow Pool in Track And Field and in the Red Pool in Wrestling. Central will be in the Blue Pool in Boys Soccer, Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving, as well as Boys and Girls Tennis. The Hawks are in the Green Pool in Girls Soccer, Softball and Boys Baseball.

   McCLUER NORTH — After dominating in Suburban North and Suburban XII North Wrestling, the Stars will be in the Yellow Pool. They will compete against Eureka, Lafayette, Lindbergh, Mehlville, Northwest, Parkway South and Seckman (Imperial).

In the Red Pool McCluer North competes in Boys and Girls Basketball, Girls Swimming and Diving, Baseball and Track And Field. In the Green Pool, the Stars compete in Girls Soccer, Boys Swimming and Diving, Softball, Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Tennis and Boys and Girls Golf. Finally, Boys Soccer is in the Blue Pool.

   McCLUER — The Comets are competing in the Blue Pool in Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving, Softball, Baseball, Girls Volleyball. Competing in the Green Pool are Girls Basketball, Wrestling and Track And Field.

HAZELWOOD EAST — Competing in the Blue Pool are Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Swimming And Diving, Softball, Girls Volleyball, Baseball and Boys and Girls Tennis. Competing in the Green Pool are Boys Basketball, Wrestling and Track And Field.
