Hazelwood’s BMX/Skate Competition Gives Youth a Chance to Show off Their Talents

Local BMX freestylers and daring skateboarders who like to do stunts are encouraged to sign up for this year’s 3rd Annual Summer BMX/Skate Competition, sponsored by the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division. The event is scheduled for Friday, June 19, at Hazelwood’s Skate Park, located behind the Community Center at 1186 Teson Road in White Birch Park. Starting time is 6 p.m.

The competition is open to all young athletes in the North St. Louis County area. There is a $5 entry fee for all participants. A $100 cash prize will be awarded to the Top Finisher. Raffles and attendance prizes are going to be given away as well. Music and concessions will be provided.

Contestants can sign up to compete in either the BMX or Skateboard category. One winner will be selected from each category. BMX freestylers will be judged on their artistic abilities to do tricks on an 8-foot ramp, 6-foot half-pipe and ramp, a spine, a pyramid, a 4-foot ramp and a 3-foot half-pipe. The skateboarders will be evaluated on their creative ability to use the same apparatus to do vertical aerials, ollies, kickflips and other stunt maneuvers.

The Hazelwood Skate Park can be used by skateboarders as well as BMX riders. Hours of operation during the summer months are: Monday – Friday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday– Saturday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The temperature must be 50 degrees for the Skate Park to open. Daily user fees are $1 for residents and $2 for nonresidents. Guests must fill out a participation waiver and turn it in at the Recreation office prior to use of the Skate Park. Safety helmets and pads can be rented for $1 each.
