BY CAROL ARNETT
The new Nature Lodge at Sunset Park may soon be available for rental. The Florissant City Council held a first reading on a bill that sets the fees for rental.
Councilman Tim Lee, who introduced the bill, said that City Parks Director Ron Veech had researched comparable facilities in surrounding cities to help determine the fee schedule.
The proposed fees vary for each area of the lodge and for weekends and weekdays. Residents could rent the facilities at a cheaper rate than non-residents. Weekends would be more expensive than weekdays.
The bill also offers rates for different areas of the lodge. The spaces available would be the education room and fireplace room on the top floor, as well as the entire to floor. The basement room and education room on the lower floor would also be available. The deck would be accessible to any renters.
The proposed fees range from $150 for resident rental of the basement room or fireplace room on a weekday to $700 for non-residential rental of the entire top floor on a weekend.
However, Lee told the council that the proposed rates could change based on new information. “I just got information today about occupancy limits,” he said. “This could affect the fees.” For example, Lee said, the fireplace room has a maximum occupancy of 20 people. The entire top floor has a maximum occupancy of 109 people. Lee said that the proposed fees may change before the bill comes up for a final reading at the next council meeting.
Councilman Tom Schneider suggested that the city could offer certain days at a lower rate. Lee said that there had also been discussion of discounts for non-profit groups.
In other Nature Lodge news, Lee said that the lodge was now open daily from 8 a.m. to noon and again from 1:to 4:30 p.m. He said that there were not any exhibits yet, but the building was open if anyone wanted to see it.
The council postponed the bill until the next council meeting.
