By Randy Gardner
I always talk about this being a great time of the year with March Madness NCAA basketball going on. Well is it really this year? I have talked to dozens of people who don’t even have a team left in a bracket. What a season for upsets especially when the number 16 seed teams beat the number one seeds. Who would have ever thought of that but it happened for the first time in history. That goes to prove the saying, never say never, is pretty true.
I have not participated in a bracket probably in over 5 years or so. I get so frustrated and caught up in the madness that it is just better for me not to be a part of it and watch others suffer. I will tell you what; it is a total guessing game. These teams that knock off the higher seeds eventually get beaten usually pretty bad but it is fun to watch as the underdog beats the team expected to win.
These colleges make millions of dollars off of this tournament and that’s why a win for a smaller school or a low ranked school is huge. It helps financially but it also is a free advertisement for the school putting them in the National spotlight. Don’t you wish all sports had this level of excitement from start to finish?
I will talk much more about the Cardinals next week as opening day is getting really close. I can’t wait for the season to start, like I said before, there is nothing like a summer night watching some Cardinals baseball. With the weather being so chilly, it might be better that the Cardinals are still in Florida and we are just watching on TV!
As spring is here, (at least on the calendar) many think of high school sports, but many only think of baseball. How about getting out and supporting sports like lacrosse, rugby, tennis, water polo, volleyball and many others that take place in the spring that don’t get much publicity. These athletes work really hard at their sports just like the fall sports. Who knows you might pick up a liking to a sport that you have never seen before. Best of all, most of these sports are free to go and watch. Show your support.
