Hazelwood Central Boys and Girls Basketball teams and the Lutheran North Girls saw their seasons end in the State Quarterfinals.
On March 10 at Lindenwood University’s Robert Hyland Arena in St. Charles, the Hazelwood Central Boys lost 79-72 to eventual Class Five State Runner Up Chaminade College Prep. Earlier that day the Hazelwood Central Girls lost 79-67 to St. Joseph’s Academy, eventual third-place finishers in Class Five, snapping a 17-game Hawk win streak. In Class Three March 3 at Warrenton High Lutheran North lost a 50-48 overtime game to Clark County, which finished fourth in state.
Hazelwood Central Boys, after winning Class Five District Two at McCluer North, defeated Poplar Bluff 66-64 March 7 at Jefferson College in Hillsboro. Earlier that night at Jefferson College Hazelwood Central Girls, after winning District Two, defeated Jackson 58-47.
Lutheran North, which took third in state last year (2017) won the Feb. 28 Sectional at St. Charles West over Metro-St. Louis, 48-42. Lutheran North, in Class Three, District Seven at Duchesne High in St. Charles, rolled over host Duchesne 59-28 on Feb. 20, over Trinity Catholic 59-18 on Feb. 22 and over McCluer South-Berkeley 63-29 on Feb. 24.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL BOYS — The Hawks finished the season with a 27-3 record and all three losses are to teams that took home state trophies. Besides Chaminade, Hazelwood Central lost to Illinois Class 2A repeat state champion Chicago Orr Academy and to Columbia-Rock Bridge, third in Missouri Class Five. Hazelwood Central won a one-point game over eventual Class Five State Champion Webster Groves and won over a Jennings team that took third place in Missouri Class Four.
Hazelwood Central won the Suburban XII Conference North Division title with a 7-0 record, won the St. John Vianney Tournament, the Coaches versus Cancer Holliday Tournament, the Parkway West Classic and Class Five, District Two. The Hawks had winning streaks of seven, 14 and six while defeating Polar Bluff and Hazelwood West twice each.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL GIRLS — The Hawks finished with a 21-7 overall record and was 4-0 in winning the Suburban XII North. The Hawks started the season with a 4-6 record including a five game losing streak. During that period, the Hawks lost twice to Class Five State Champion Kirkwood, to Illinois Class 4A fourth-place finisher Edwardsville and defeated St. Joseph’s Academy in the first match. Central would then win 17 in a row including twice each over Pattonville and Hazelwood West.
LUTHERAN NORTH GIRLS — The Crusaders finished 24-4 and 5-0 in winning the Metro League and won the Lutheran St. Charles and St. Dominic tournaments. LHSN defeated Mary Institute-Country Day School, John Burroughs and McCluer South Berkeley twice each, split with Metro and had win streaks of five, seven, two and 10. LHSN lost to eventual Class Three State Champion Stafford.
