Hazelwood Students Earn Special School District Award

The Special School District of St. Louis County selected four students from Hazelwood West High School to receive a Rosemary Zander Award.

This year’s winners are Joe Everett, John LeRoy, Kirk Moore and Benjamin Blair. The students, along with other winners from schools served by SSD, will be honored at the Commitment to Kids Banquet in April that will also be attended by district, corporate and community leaders.

Rosemary Zander was a Special School District teacher who devoted her career to building student self-esteem. The award, established in 1988, recognizes students for remarkable achievements and outstanding attitudes.

Students are nominated by an SSD staff member such as a teacher, diagnostician, speech/language therapist, physical therapist or occupational therapist, and must receive at least one special education service from SSD and be between the ages of 3 and 21 years old.

LeRoy is also a recipient of a 2009 Bonhomme Lions Scholarship in the amount of $800. The Bonhomme Lions provide scholarships to graduating SSD students. Winners are also recognized at the banquet.
