In 2008, Lutheran High School North and Metro-East Lutheran (Edwardsville, Ill.) added night games to their campuses although Metro East Lutheran played their first full schedule of home night games in 2009.
This Saturday, Aug. 26, Lutheran North hosts the first of four home night games this season. The Crusaders play Orchard Farm in a 7 p.m. game.
Lutheran North is the fourth St. Louis area Lutheran High School to play night Football and is the second school in the Metro League, joining Lutheran South, to play night football. In past years, Lutheran North had played night home games in district and state play with temporary lights.
Lutheran North began the season in Evansville, Ind., Aug. 19 with a 39-18 win over Mater Dei at Reitz Memorial Stadium. Lutheran North led at halftime 18-7 and then ran away from Mater Dei with a 21-3 fourth quarter. Donavan Marshall, with 135 yards rushing on 18 carries, and Canaan Brooks, each ran for two touchdowns.
Orchard Farm lost 27-19 Aug. 18 to O’Fallon, Mo., Christian. Lutheran North begins play Sept 2 with a 1 p.m. game at Westminster Christian Academy, which opened the season with 31-22 loss at St. Mary’s.
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL is taking a 1-0 record to O’Fallon, Ill., Friday, Aug. 25, in a 7 p.m. game. Hazelwood Central began the season Aug. 18 with a 28-13 win at DeSmet Jesuit. Raphael Bell, who ran for two touchdowns, helped the Hawks leading 15-0 after one quarter and 28-7 after 3 quarters. Hazelwood Central plays their home opener Sept. 2 with a 1 p.m. game against Lindbergh, a 41-7 winner Aug. 18 over Oakville.
O’Fallon, Ill., is playing their season opener and is coming off a 5-5 season last year. O’Fallon lost the Illinois Class 8A first-round playoff game, 42-14 at Loyola Academy, Chicago.
HAZELWOOD EAST is taking its 1-0 record to Lafayette High Friday in a 7 p.m. kickoff then heads to Mehlville Sept. 1, also at 7 p.m. On Aug. 19, Hazelwood East routed University City 46-0 as the Spartans scored 12 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second and 13 in the third as the non-stop clock rule began with 4:58 left in the third quarter. Mekhi Hagens completed 13 passes for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Daveon Drayton, Maurice Chavers and Maurice Adkins each scored two touchdowns. The Spartans are playing in memory of Daven Turner, who — according to media reports — died Aug. 13 — two days before he was to start his senior year.
Lafayette is coming off their Aug. 18 season-opening win over Wentzville-Timberland 29-21 while on the same nigh Mehlville lost 49-19 to Francis Howell High.
HAZELWOOD WEST heads to University City High’s Muhl-Schemmer Stadium Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff of 0-1 teams. The Wildcats return home for a 1 p.m. game Sept. 1 against Rockwood-Marquette.
Hazelwood West lost their Aug. 18 after-school home opener to Webster Groves, 34-27 despite the passing of Darius Cooper — who completed seven passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns to Vicario Upchurch, catching five of Cooper’s passes for 150 yards. The Wildcats took their only lead, 27-26, with 9:04 left in the fourth quarter on a 51-yard touchdown by Charlie Davis, who rushed 13 times for 114 yards but Webster won the game with 3:01 left on the second John Doria to Ethan Cooley touchdown pass, and they connected on a two- point conversion.
McCLUER NORTH plays their second after-school home game Friday at 4:15 against Ferguson-Florissant District rival McCluer-South-Berkeley, ranked first in Missouri Class Three State poll of 15 sports writers and broadcasters. The Stars play their first road game Sept. 1, 7 p.m. at Parkway South, which opened Aug. 18 with a 22-12 loss at Parkway West.
McCluer North lost 47-0 at home Aug. 18 to Jefferson City while the Missouri State High School Activities Association gave McCluer South-Berkeley a forfeit win over Northwest Academy of Law. MS-Berkeley hosts Orchard Farm Sept. 2 at 1 p.m.
