Hazelwood District Students Qualify for State DECA Contest

Students from Hazelwood Central and Hazelwood West high schools have qualified for DECA state competition in March.

DECA is an international association for students with a mission of enhancing “the co-curricular education of students with interest in marketing, management and entrepreneurship” by helping students develop skills and competence for marketing careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and practice community service. DECA programs and activities are tailored to the specific career interest of students and include technical skills, basic scholastic and communication skills, human relations and employability skills, and a strong emphasis on economics and free enterprise.

After good showings at DECA District 7 Competition in mid-February, the students earned the opportunity to advance to state competition, to be held March 22-March 24 at the Lake of the Ozarks.

District 7 winners from Hazelwood Central High advancing to state include: Tim Moore, retail merchandise marketing; Jasmaine McCurry, Devonne Theard, buying and merchandising; Candace Petty, fashion merchandising plan. Josh Merritt placed in sports and entertainment marketing, however, will not compete at state.

From Hazelwood West High, state competitors include: Tommy Wiele, Jake Spies, Devon Brun, Casie Eichel, Krystal Jones, entrepreneurship written business plan; Ricky LoGrasso, Justin Thompson, Ryan Miener, Internet marketing business plan; Tyler Temm, entrepreneurship participating event business plan; Zach Ferguson, Devon Brun, food marketing; Torri Vandeveer, hotel and lodging; Ryan Clark, apparel and accessories; Tommy Wiele, Jake Spies, Devon Brun, Zach Thomas, sports entertainment team event; Ricky LoGrasso, Radi Abdeljabbar, buying and merchandising team event.
