Coming off a 16-12 season in 2016 McCluer North Baseball opens the season 5-2 and that includes going 3-1 against the Parkway School District, 1-1 playing in Bethalto, Ill., and 1-0 at home prior to April 4.
McCluer North began the season going to all four schools in the Parkway School District in a five-day period, March 20-24. The Stars began Mach 20 with a 4-2 win at Parkway Central then on the next day, March 21, won 10-2 at Parkway South. Two days later, March 23 the Stars got routed 14-4 at Parkway West but a day later, March 24 McCluer North got a 9-0 shutout at Parkway North.
McCluer North went to Bethalto, Ill., April 1 and went 1-1 at the Bethalto Sports Complex. The Stars defeated Civic Memorial 2-0 then lost 7-1 to Mary Institute/Country Day School, which also played at the Bethalto Sports Complex and lost 11-1 to Civic Memorial.
McCluer North played their first home game March 29 and defeated Ladue-Horton Watkins 1-0 on a sixth-inning run. The game was rescheduled from March 27 due to rain. The Stars were to play St. Louis University High on March 25 and then on March 28 but after two postponements the game is rescheduled for April 26 at 5:15 at SLUH’s Sheridan Stadium.
McCluer North was to start Suburban XXII Conference North Division play April 4 at Hazelwood Central (see related story) and wasto play at home April 5 against Brentwood, The Stars then host Hazelwood Central, Thursday, April 6 at 4 p.m.
HAZELWOOD WEST, defending Suburban XII North champions (8-1) is coming off a 15-12 season and a Class Five, District Six title before losing to Class Five Quarterfinalist Parkway Central in the Sectional round. The Wildcats were 2-3 prior to opening Suburban XII North play April 4 at Hazelwood East and the 2-3 record was in the 47th Lindbergh-Mehlville Tournament defeating Mehlville (7-4 March 20) and Webster Groves (8-7 March 21) while losing to Pattonville (2-1 March 17), Oakville (6-1 March 18) and St. Mary’s (11-3 March 22) Games against Fort Zumwalt West and CBC were cancelled while the April 3 game at Kirkwood was rained out
Hazelwood West hosts Hazelwood East Thursday at 4 p.m., visits Parkway North Friday, April 7, 4:15 (rescheduled from March 28) and hosts Parkway North Saturday, April 8 in a 10 a.m. double-header.
HAZELWOOD EAST is coming off a 3-11 season in 2016 and took seventh place in the North County Classic. Four games were rained out and the Spartans were to host Hazelwood West April 4.
