Florissant Mayor and City Council Supporting Proposition P For Police, Public Safety

       One-Half of 1 % Sales Tax on County Ballot

Florissant Mayor Thomas P. Schneider and the nine-member Florissant City Council have unanimously endorsed Proposition P, a measure on the April 4 election ballot in St. Louis County. The endorsement was made at Florissant’s City Council meeting on Monday, March 13.

City Council measure #994 urges registered Florissant voters to vote ‘Yes’ on Proposition P, a St. Louis County ballot issue related to funding to improve public safety. The measure was adopted and signed by City Council President Jackie Pagano and Mayor Schneider.

Proposition P states “Shall St. Louis County impose a one-half of one percent sales tax for the purpose of providing funds to improve police and public safety in St. Louis County and each of the municipalities within St. Louis County?” The purpose of the proposal is to provide “funds for public safety, in addition to all other sales taxes presently levied; and imposing said sales tax conditional upon approval of the proposal.”

“Proposition P is an important measure not only for Florissant residents but for all residents of St. Louis County,” said Mayor Schneider. “We strongly endorse passage of Proposition P to help our Florissant Police Department improve its already excellent standards and to help the County to improve safety in the surrounding cities and unincorporated areas of North St. Louis County and the entire County.”

According to the www.yesonpropp.com web site, “Revenues from this sales tax shall be used as follows: an amount equal to three-eighths of the proceeds of the tax shall be distributed to the County and the remaining five-eighths shall be distributed to the cities, towns and villages and the unincorporated area of the County according to the percentage of their population relative to the entire County.

   The web site notes that St. Louis County’s portion of the revenue would enable:

  • The hiring of more police officers;
  • A second police officer in patrol cars when necessary;
  • Increasing police and department staff salaries;
  • Installing dashboard cameras in police vehicles;
  • Expanding officer training on topics such as peaceful conflict resolution;
  • Providing body cameras for officers; and
  • Developing a computerized crime reporting system.
