Rance Thomas Elected Chairman of Health Protection and Education Services

Rance Thomas, president of North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice, was recently elected Chairman of the Health Protection and Education Services Board.  This organization, located in University City, provides free health screenings and health education to detect and prevent diseases for the uninsured and underserved individuals in the St. Louis Area.

This program is unique in that it provides one of the most comprehensive screening and health education services in the Metro Area.

For example, it provides normal screening such as height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, blood tests (hemoglobin, cholesterol, diabetes), but it also provides a variety of other tests such as EKGs, vision, hearing, dental, urine, skin testing, etc.  It includes mental health screening, diet information, skin care, pharmacy information, mammogram screening once a year, etc.

The Health Protection and Education Services will pay for the first visit to a facility for those who need treatment.

The Board was organized 17 years ago by the late Dr. Robert Paine, a retired Chief of Cardiology at St. Luke’s Hospital. “Because I was a sociologist, I was asked to analyze how more minorities could be encouraged to participate,” said Rance Thomas.

Since that time Dr. Thomas has been participating in the screening and education processes, and seven years ago he became a member of the board of directors.

Screenings are held the third Saturday of each month for ten months in the University City Public Library, at 6701 Delmar Blvd. from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
