Hazelwood West Softball Hosts Class 4, District 6 As Top Seed

Hazelwood West Softball will be hosting Class Four, District Six as the top seed after finishing as Suburban XII Conference North Division Champions

Hazelwood West finished Suburban XII North play with a 9-0 record and was 17-2 overall as of Oct. 3. The Wildcats will play Thursday, Oct. 6, with a 4:15 game at home against the winner of the Hazelwood East at McCluer game played Wednesday, Oct. 5. The Thursday winner of the game played at West will play against the winner of the other Thursday 4:15 game, third-seeded Hazelwood Central at second-seeded McCluer North, on Friday, Oct.7, at 4:15 and also at West.

The Class Four, District Six winner will play at home in the Oct. 12 Sectional round at 4 p.m. against the winner of Class Four, District Five. However, the Class Four, District Six winner, if they defeat the Class Four, District Five winner, will be on the road for the Class Four Quarterfinal Oct. 15, time to be determined after the Sectional, against the District Seven winner or the District Eight winner. The State Semifinals and Finals are Oct. 21-22 at Killian Park, Springfield, Mo.

“   Everyone on the team works hard,” said Hazelwood West head coach Erica Thompson after the Wildcats’ 17-3 win Sept. 23 at St. Charles West, the second win of the year for the ‘Cats against the Warriors. Hazelwood West also has two wins each against Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, McCluer High and McCluer North. The Wildcats are solid on defense and consistent at the plate, said Thompson.

   McCLUER NORTH won Class Two, District Six Girls Tennis played last week at Hazelwood West. McCluer North defeated Hazelwood East and Hazelwood Central in the team tournament by identical 5-0 scored. The McCluer North team will play Saturday, Oct. 8, 9 a.m. against Francis Howell Central at Liberty High in Lake St. Louis. Sectional host Wentzville-Timberland plays defending two-time state champion Columbia-Rock Bridge on the same day and time and the winner plays later that day at 1 p.m. for the right to play in the State team tournament, Oct. 13 at Cooper Tennis Complex, Springfield.

In the individual Class Four District Six Tournament titles McCluer North won singles (Navone Armstrong) and doubles (Na’kie Coleman-Elhasan and Saniah Jamielah Savala).

In Boys Cross Country McCluer North senior Clinton Heffner won the Hazelwood West-Terry Meatheany Invitational Sept. 23 running the Koch Park course in 16 minutes, 50.19 seconds.

   DISTRICT TENNIS — Class Four, District Six runners up went to Sarah Merlenbach, Hazelwood West, singles and the Hazelwood Central doubles team of Darvetta Wallace and Briah Wilkins.
