McCluer North Girls Wrestling Sends

Three To State; Boys Districts Feb. 8-9

Girls’ Wrestling marks its inaugural Missouri State High School Activities Association state championship appearance when they compete along with the Boys Feb. 14-16 at Mizzou Arena, University of Missouri in Columbia.

Girls will start wrestling at 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 14, 12:15 on Feb. 15 and 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 16. Championship matches, Boys and Girls are Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. Only the top four girls in each weight class take home state medals

McCluer North had only seven wrestlers competed Feb. 1-2 in District Two at Fort Zumwalt North and only three oft them will be goi9ng to Mizzou Arena. Leading the way with the area’s first district title is sophomore Natalie Schaljo, in the 131-pound weight class. After a first-round bye Schaljo took 1:37 to pin Sophia Pinkstaff, Columbia-Hickman, two minutes to pin Kayla McGennis, Wentzville-Timberland, and 4:38 to pin Jessie Deane, Fort Zumwalt West.

Also going too Mizzou Arena are senior Kyra Perry (116) and junior Paige Folkner (121). Both rebounded from semifinal losses to take third-place finishes. However, sophomore Elisabeth Cosentino (152) was eliminated from going to state losing the third-place match by fall in 4:59 to Madison Oellermann, St. Charles High.

   McCLUER sent eight wrestlers to District Two but only sophomore Alexus Yancey (167) will be going to state. After a first-round bye, Yancey pinned Hannah Bain, St. Charles, in 35 seconds and defeated Lebria Cook, Columbia-Hickman in a 16-14 decision before losing in the first-place match by pin (2:52) to Paige Clines, Fulton. Freshman Kynia Holloway (116) was the closest of the other seven from qualifying but was eliminated in the third place match by pin (2:32) to Perry.

   BOYS — Districts take place Friday, Feb. 8 at 5 or 6 p.m., and Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. the top four wrestlers from each of the 14 weight classes advance to State Feb. 14-16 at Mizzou Arena. State matches start at 9 a.m. (Classes One, Two) and 5:15 (Classes Three, Four) Feb. 14, 8:30 a.m. (Classes One, Two) and 1:30 (Classes Three, Four) Feb. 15 and 9:30 a.m. (wrestle backs) Feb. 16. State Championships are at 4 p.m. Feb. 16.

Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West and McCluer North are in Class Four, District Two at Wentzville-Holt, Hazelwood East and McCluer are in Class Three, District Two at St. Charles High and McCluer South-Berkeley is in Class One, District One at Whitfield.

   GIRLS SWIMMING – CLASS TWO STATE – HAZELWOOD CENTRAL senior Amanda Hei will qualify for state, Feb. 14-15 at the St. Peters Rec Plex, thanks to her efforts in the 2019 COMO Invite finals Jam. 5 in Columbia. Hei swam the 100-Yard Butterfly in 1:00.08 and the 100-Yard Breaststroke in 1:10.28.

   HAZELWOOD WEST sophomore Amaani Hanin’s best chance to qualify for Class Two State is in the 100-Yard Breaststroke. At the Suburban Red Pool Championships Feb 1 at Rockwood Summit Hanin swam the Breaststroke in 1:12.47. The best shot in qualifying in relays is toe 200-Yard Medley (2:02.56 in the Dec. 1 Ladue Invitational) and/or the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:50.8 at the Suburban Red Pool).Qualifying is dependent on results from Metro League and GAC Championships Feb. 4-6.
