Tallent, Butler Join Campbell In State Boys Swimming Qualifying

Two juniors, Drew Tallent of McCluer and Jaylan Butler of Hazelwood East, joins Hazelwood West junior Spencer Campbell in qualifying for State Boys Swimming Nov. 4-5 at St. Peters Rec-Plex, since there are no districts.

Tallent, who was the first McCluer Boys Swimmer to qualify for state last year since 2004, returns to state in the 100-yard Butterfly after winning the Sept. 8 meet at McCluer South-Berkeley against Hazelwood East in 55.38 seconds. Also in the same meet at MS-Berkeley Butler swam the Butterfly in 55.36 seconds becoming the first Hazelwood East swimmer to qualify for state in an undetermined long time.

Tallent and Butler join Campbell who had qualified to return to state in two Aug. 27 events at the Ladue Invitational, 50-yard Freestyle in 22.45 seconds and 100-yard Freestyle in 8.83 seconds. Campbell also set State Qualifying marks in the 200-yard Freestyle, 1:50.02 Sept. 8 at home against McCluer North, and the 200-yard Individual Medley, 2:04.95 Sept. 13 at Hazelwood Central. However Missouri State High School Activities Association rules limit individual swimmers to two events but can compete in up to four if it includes relay events.

DISTRICT GIRLS TENNIS — Hazelwood West hosts Class Two, District Six with Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, McCluer North and McCluer competing. Incarnate Word Academy hosts Class One, District Five with North Tech, Lutheran North, McCluer South-Berkeley, Clayton and University City competing.

Team Tournaments will be played Sept. 26-29 — dates, times and sites of team matches unavailable as of 12:30 p.m. Sept. 19 — while Singles and Doubles Tournaments to follow Team tourneys but must end by Oct. 1. Team champions from Districts Five and Six, both classes, meet Oct. 8 at District Seven winners sites while the top two Singles players and top two Doubles teams from Districts Five and Six compete one day during the Oct. 3-5 at Incarnate Word (Class One) and Francis Howell (Class Two). The State Championships are at Cooper Tennis Complex, Springfield Oct. 13 (Team), Oct 14-15 (Singles-Doubles).

DISTRICT GIRLS GOLF — Incarnate Word Academy will compete in Class Two, District Two, Sept. 26 at Aberdeen Golf Club, Eureka while McCluer North will compete in Class Two, District Three Sept. 28 at The Links at Dardenne, O’Fallon, both par-72. The top two teams and the top 15 individuals from teams placing third or lower will advance to Class Two Sectionals, Oct. 3, at sites to be determined after districts. From Sectionals the top two teams and the top 12 individuals from teams finishing third or lower will advance to Class Two State, Oct 10-11 at the par -71 Columbia, Mo., Country Club.

However if a team finishes third or lower in Districts and/or Sectionals but qualify at least four individuals for Sectionals and/or State that team will be in Sectional and/or State.
