Hazelwood West Does Well in Softball and Swimming

Hazelwood West Starts 4-0 In Softball;

Qualifies Freestyle Swimmer For State

Labor Day, Sept. 5, has come and gone but Hazelwood West enjoyed what has happened before Labor Day in two sports teams.

Softball started the season with four wins and no losses. Junior Freestyle Swimmer Spencer Campbell qualified for two sprint events in the Missouri State Championships, Nov. 4-5 at St. Peters Rec-Plex.

Hazelwood West Softball defeated Ladue-Horton Watkins 19-0 (called after three innings-Mercy Rule), defeated Clayton 6-0, Parkway Central 9-3 and defending Suburban XII Conference North Division Champion McCluer North 7-2. The scheduled Aug. 30 game at Riverview Gardens was rained out. After playing Sept. 6 at Hazelwood Central, West hosts a pair of 4 p.m. games, Thursday (Sept. 8) against Hazelwood East and Friday (Sept. 9) against Pattonville, before playing Sept. 12, 4:15, at Trinity Catholic.

Sophomore Alexandria Cafolla was batting .643, slugging .714 and had an on-base percentage of .667. Cafolla was 4-0 as a starting pitcher, completing two games, with a 1.05 earned run average and 28 strikeouts while waling only two. Seniors Lakeita Chappel and Chloe Johnson and sophomore Meredith Vietmeier each have six runs batted in with Johnson scoring seven runs.

At the Ladue Swimming and Diving Invitational, Aug. 27, Campbell, according to DirectAthletes.com, swam the 50-yard Freestyle in 22.45 seconds and the 100-yard Freestyle in 48.83 seconds. State Qualifying Standards, according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association are 22.89 seconds for the 50 Freestyle and 50.29 seconds in the 100 Freestyle. Last year in State at the St. Peters Rec-Plex Campbell finished 11th in the 100 Freestyle (48.68 seconds) and 15th in the 50 Freestyle (22.51 seconds).

Hazelwood West, in 4 p.m. meets hosts McCluer North Thursday, visits Hazelwood Central Sept. 13, hosts Hazelwood East Sept 15 and visits McCluer Sept. 20.

   CROSS COUNTRY — The Hazelwood West-Terry Meatheany Invitational will be held Sept. 23, 4 p.m., at Koch Park with Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, McCluer North, McCluer and North Tech among the competitors. HAZELWOOD CENTRAL will host the Paul Enke Invitational at Sioux Passage Park Sept. 17, 9 a.m., with Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West and McCluer competing. LUTHERAN NORTH will host an Invitational Sept. 15, 4:30 at Spanish Lake Park with North Tech, Incarnate Word Academy and McCluer South-Berkeley competing.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — McCLUER NORTH will host a six-team, two pool tournament Sept. 17. At 9 a.m. McCluer North plays Visitation Academy (Pool A) while Parkway Central plays Trinity Catholic (Pool B). At 10 a.m. Visitation plays Father McGivney Catholic (Glen Carbon, Ill.) (Pool A) while O’Fallon (Mo.) Christian plays Parkway Central (Pool B). At 11 a.m. McCluer North plays Father McGivney (Pool A) while Trinity plays O’Fallon Christian (Pool B). Semifinals and fifth-place matches are at 12 noon and 1 p.m. Championship and third-place matches are at 2 p.m.
