Hazelwood Central, Trinity, Lutheran North Each Starts 3-0

Pre-Labor Day starts for five North County High School Football teams are unbeaten as each starts 3-0 including Hazelwood Central, Trinity Catholic and Lutheran North.

Hazelwood Central opened the season with wins over DeSmet Jesuit, 26-14, O’Fallon, Ill., 21-7, and Lindbergh, 41-0. Trinity Catholic has their first 3-0 start since its opening in 2003, after the merger of St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy and Rosary, with a 56-0 win over Priory then wins over Archdiocesan Athletic Association rivals Duchesne (51-0) and Cardinal Ritter College Prep (47-13). After opening the season with wins over Clayton (52-0) and Orchard Farm (22-16), Lutheran North opened Metro League play Sept. 3 with a 24-21 home victory over defending Metro League Champion Westminster Christian Academy, Class Four Semifinalist.

Two other North County High Schools also started 3-0. McCluer South-Berkeley, after winning by forfeit over Northwest Academy of Law, defeated McCluer North 32-13 and Orchard Farm 40-12. Ritenour won 30-0 at Wentzville-Holt, 40-7 over McCluer and 42-13 over Northwest High-Cedar Hill.

Hazelwood Central begins the first of five Suburban XII Conference North Division play in the next six weeks Saturday at home against Hazelwood East, scheduled for 1 p.m. but may be moved to 2 p.m. because of ACT Tests. Central then travels to McCluer North for a 1 p.m. game Sept. 17.

Trinity Catholic will be playing the next two weeks in AAA Small Division play on the road against a pair of 0-3 teams in 7 p.m. games. Trinity plays Friday at O’Fallon (Mo.) Christian and Sept. 16 at Bishop DuBourg, which co-ops with Hancock Place High and plays Friday against Affton.

Lutheran North plays the next two Saturdays playing against the top rivals from the Metro League. Lutheran North travels to 1-2 Mary Institute-Country Day School this Saturday for a 2 p.m. game then returns home Sept. 17 for a 1 p.m. game against defending Class Three State Champion John Burroughs, 2-1 prior to playing Westminster Christian Saturday.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL got a combined 321 yards rushing and passing for three touchdowns from Antonio Triplett, Jr., in dealing O’Fallon, Ill., their season opening loss and got three rushing touchdowns from Raphael Bell in their road whitewash of Lindbergh.

  TRINITY CATHOLIC, in the road wipeout at Duchesne, got three touchdown passes from Isaiah Williams, two of them to Jeremiah Taylor. While not being able to shut out Cardinal Ritter the Titans got two touchdowns from Torre Boland.

LUTHERAN NORTH got six touchdown passes from Aqeel Glass, three at Clayton and two at Orchard Farm, five Jordan Sommerville touchdown receptions, two each at Clayton and Orchard Farm and Isaiah Azubuike scored two touchdowns against Clayton.

  HAZELWOOD EAST, after taking their 2-1 record to Hazelwood Central, visits Hazelwood West Sept. 17 for a 1 p.m. game. East lost 39-6 Aug. 26 at Lafayette then won 14-7 at home Sept. 3 over Mehlville. Shaun Browder threw a touchdown pass against Lafayette and against Mehville, where he ran for another.

HAZELWOOD WEST heads to Riverview Gardens Saturday for a 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. game with a 1-2 record after routing University City 41-6 but was routed 42-13 at Rockwood-Marquette. Steven McClain threw three touchdown passes against U. City and two TD passes to Vicario Upchurch at Marquette.

   McCLUER is 1-2 prior to hosting McCluer North Friday at 4:15 then visits Riverview Gardens Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. The Comets lost at Ritenour and 26-9 at home against Imperial-Seckman.

RIVERVIEW GARDENS is 1-2 winning 26-12 over Normandy after losing 48-8 at Poplar Bluff and 43-32 at Northwest-Cedar Hill. McCLUER NORTH, 0-3, lost to MS-Berkeley and Parkway South, 19-7.
