Florissant Dedicates Plaque to Paul Kohnen

Walk Through History Program Honors The

Late Paul J. Kohnen

Over 100 family and friends gathered in front of 411 rue St. Francois to unveil the 26th Walk Through History plaque in honor of the late Paul J. Kohnen. Family came from all over the country to be able to be a part of this special event and Mayor Tom Schneider, Chief Tim Lowery and Ward 6 Councilman Henke applauded Florissant’s biggest family and Monsignor Ullrich, pastor of Sacred Heart Church blessed the occasion.

Paul was born, raised and lived his entire life in Florissant. He grew up in a farmhouse located at the end of St. Antoine. The farmhouse is occupied today by his brother Joe. At one time eight of his ten brothers and sisters were raising their own families within a couple of blocks of one another.

Paul built his home on the corner of St. Antoine & Aubuchon Street. In 1945 he married Thelma Korte where they raised six children. Their home was added on twice to accommodate their growing family. Thelma still lives in this house today.

During World War II Paul was a sergeant and served in the United States Air Corps and was stationed in England. After the war he returned home to become a milkman and in 1955 was able to purchase Bergen’s Dairy, which was later named Kohnen’s Dairy.

He was a past president of Florissant Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a board member with Florissant Bank, Citizen’s Bank and Christian Hospital. He was also a lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart Church. He was instrumental in raising funds for TEAM Ministries to move to their current location. Paul lived for his family and invested in his church and community.
