• Northwinds Concert Band Holiday Concert

The Northwinds Concert Band, under the direction of Larry Marsh, will present a holiday concert on Dec, 14, at 3 p.m. in the Florissant Civic Center Theatre.

The program will feature the U.S. premier of a new work for band and French horn by German composer Otto Schwarz, music by the Beatles and Duke Ellington, plus seasonal favorites, including vocal solos by Ike Eichenberger and Marc Strathman.

Reserved tickets are $8 adults, $6 for students and seniors, $12 for the entire immediate family.

• Florissant’s Snowman Building Contest Runs Through Feb. 15

Florissant has announced its snowman building contest which will be open until Feb. 15. The contest is only for Florissant residents, ages 5-15 years.

Take a picture of yourself and the snowman, and send it along with an application. Prizes will be awarded. The Youth Advisory Commission will be the judges of this contest. Pick up an application, email a digital photo to jsteib@florissantmo.com, or send your picture with your child’s name, address, phone number and age to: Snowman Contest, James J. • Snack With Santa is Dec. 13

The Florissant Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Florissant Youth Advisory Commission, is sponsoring its annual Snack With Santa event on Saturday, Dec. 13, 9:30-11:30 a.m., at the James J. Eagan Center (Parker Road and Waterford Drive). Admission is free, but by ticket only. A limit of 200 tickets will be available at the James J. Eagan Center (Parker Road and Waterford Drive) and the JFK Community Center (315 Howdershell Road) beginning Dec. 1. A Florissant resident card is required to obtain tickets.

Families are encouraged to bring cameras to photograph their children as they visit Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves. Participants will be treated to snacks and drinks donated by local businesses. Door prizes will also be available. For more information call 921-4250 or 921-4466.

• Santa Will Respond to Letters

Florissant Parks and Recreation will sponsor letters from Santa. For a personal reply from Santa, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Santa, c/o JFK Community Center, 315 Howdershell Rd., Florissant, Mo. 63031.

Be sure to include some personal information about the child. Santa will respond with personal letters throughout the holiday season.

• Holiday Ice Skating Hours and Lessons for Children Offered

The Florissant Parks and Recreation Department ice skating rink will be open extra hours during the holiday season. The rink will be open from 2-4 p.m. on the following dates: Nov. 28 and Dec. 22, 23, 24, 26, 29, 30, 31, and Jan. 2, 19, and Feb. 16.

Children eight years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Ice skates are available to rent for $1.50. Admission fees are $1.50 for residents, age 6-17 years, $2.25 for adult residents, and $1.75 with a Golden Age Pass.

Ice skating lessons for children will be offered in two sessions for ages three and older. Lessons will be held at the outdoor ice rink at the James J. Eagan Center.

Kiddy lessons, 3-5 years, will be from 8:30-9:15 a.m., ages six and older, from 9:25-10:10 a.m., and advanced beginner’s, from 10:20-11:05 a.m. Dates are Dec. 26, 27, 29, 30 and 31. Saturday lessons will be Jan. 3-31.

Skating lessons fees are $15 for residents and $20 for non-residents. Skate rental is $1.50.

• Food Drive is Underway

Florissant’s Sharing and Caring Food Drive is underway. Collection barrels will be located at the James J. Eagan Center and JFK Community Center.

All residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable and canned food donations. These donations will be given to organizations and food pantries within the Florissant city limits. For more information, call 314-921-4466.

• Christmas House Decorating Contest Planned in Florissant

Applications are available for Florissant’s annual Christmas House Decorating Contest. The contest is sponsored in part by the Parks and Recreation Department and the Florissant Youth Advisory Commission.

Applications are free to Florissant residents and may be picked up at the James J. Eagan Center (Parker Road and Waterford Drive), the JFK Community Center (315 Howdershell), or Florissant City Hall (955 Rue St. Francois) starting Dec. 1. The deadline to return the application is Friday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m.

Only home exteriors will be judged on creativity and originality and the judging will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Temporary yard signs acknowledging first-, second-, and third-place winners will be posted. The city will remove the signs within one week. Prizes will be awarded to the best decorated homes.
