Students Given $100,000 in Scholarships to Fisk

Hazelwood East High School students Ayanna Miller and Tiara Coleman were awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to Fisk University. Both attended the Infinite Scholars Career Fair in September, where they had the opportunity to speak with university representatives from schools across the nation.

Fisk University awarded both Miller and Coleman the Clinton B. Fisk Scholarship, valued at $7,500 per year, and granted to first-time students with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. In addition to the Fisk Scholarship, Coleman was offered the Emerging Leadership Scholarship from the university based on her volunteering history. The senior was proud to say that she has over 500 volunteering hours, most gained from managing the boys’ basketball team at Hazelwood East High School. Coleman wants to study Computer Science, and said, “Growing up I always enjoyed computers, I love learning about the system and its programs.”

Miller was awarded the Fisk Grant as well, valued at $20,000. Miller has dual enrollment, taking chemistry classes at both Hazelwood East and Hazelwood West high schools, where she has enjoyed the experience of extracting caffeine and making aspirin. “Learning about medicine and how it’s used to treat ailments is really cool,” she said.  Miller plans to obtain a degree in Chemical Engineering.
