When is a Concussion Not Really A Concussion? Only in the Press Box

**Randy Gardner photo** What amazes me the most in life is that the simpler the job, the more difficult someone can make it. For example, there is now a person on the sidelines or press box of every NFL football game and their only job is to look for someone who might get hit and have a concussion. That is their only job.

On Sunday, the Rams new quarterback was pummeled in the 4th quarter so badly that he could not even get up for a bit. When he did, he was unable to keep his balance.

The training staff talked to him and then he went back to the huddle and threw an interception.

To me this is unbelievable. I know there is great food in the press box and you might get distracted every once in a while, but my goodness! This was one of the easiest calls I have ever seen.

I cannot wait for the NFL to talk about this protocol. How can we teach our college, high school and youth coaches anything about head injuries when they see stuff like this happen? There were several people in the line of command that should have stopped this, including coaches, referees and the training staff themselves. Besides the head injury, the Rams simply gave away another game. (They could have brought in Nick Boles for the next play) They had this one in the bag but let it go.

I talk about heart and desire a lot and this is what I see missing sometimes with this team. In the NFL, it only takes one or two plays when you let your guard down and the other team will cash in. These players are that good. The Rams still have a slim chance, as a wild card if they can string together a few wins.

CBC-Blue Springs South at the Dome

On to other football news. The CBC Cadets football team is headed to the Dome again to defend their title. The night after Thanksgiving, the Cadets will face off against Blue Springs South and put their 27-game unbeaten string on the line to win the title. The game will be broadcast locally, but if you get a chance, go down to the Dome and see it in person. High School football is definitely worth the price of admission.

If you are a NASCAR fan, this past weekend Jeff Gordon ran his last race. It was a storybook ending to a long career that almost got even better as he was racing for the championship. Unfortunately, he came in 4th place in the race but his classy style of racing brought a lot of new fans to the sport. Thanks, Jeff.

Finally, no matter what you are thankful for on this Thanksgiving week, make it count. Whether it is family, friends or good health and holiday cheer, take a few moments and reflect on how lucky you are for what you have. Happy Thanksgiving.
