MSHSAA Notebook: IWA Volleyball ‘Going to Kansas City’

Incarnate Word Academy Girls Volleyball will be making their 22nd trip to the Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships but this Friday-Saturday the 11-time state champion Red Knights will be making their first trip to Kansas City since 1984.

IWA (29-7) will be playing at Municipal Auditorium Friday in Class Four round-robin semifinal matches against St. Joseph’s Academy (26-9), Glendale (35-3-1) and defending Champion Lee’s Summit West (36-1). Class Four matches Friday are at 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. while Saturday the Class Four Championship match starts at 5:30 and the third-place match begins at 8:30.

IWA began their road to state at Ritenour Oct. 30 by winning Class Four, District matches over Roosevelt, 25-1, 25-2, and over the host Huskies, 25-14, 25-12. Last Saturday at McCluer North the Red Knights defeated Parkway West, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20 in the sectional round and defeated Hazelwood West, 25-11, 25-14.

While going to the MSHSAA State Championships are common for IWA it is new for first year head coach Kyle Escontrias. “They are taking to my coaching style,” said Escontrias, “I am taking to their playing style.”

HAZELWOOD WEST won Class Four, District Six Oct. 29 at McCluer over Hazelwood Central, 25-18, 25-9, and McCluer North, 28-26, 25-22. Last Saturday at McCluer North Hazelwood West defeated Fort Zumwalt West, 25-17, 26-24. “After this year we expect to be in the similar position next year,” said Hazelwood West head coach Mike Vaughn.

CROSS COUNTRY–STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS SATURDAY — LUTHERAN NORTH will be competing for the Class Two State Girls team title this Saturday 11:15 a.m. at the Oak Hills Golf Center, Jefferson City. Last Saturday Lutheran North won the District Two Girls meet at Spanish Lake Park. Sarah Bachmann, who finished second (21:05) to Principia’s Stephanie Romero (20:28), led Lutheran North.

Other girls will go to Jefferson City Saturday to compete as individuals, especially in the Class Four race at 9:30 a.m. That includes Debbie Boedeker, Britney Neuhauser and Gladys Downing, McCluer North and Leigh Paridy, Incarnate Word Academy.

In Boys Cross Country Four runners from Suburban North Conference schools will compete as individuals Saturday at 10:45 a.m. in Jefferson City. They are: Charles Johnson, Hazelwood East; Josh Lewis, McCluer North; Ben McGraw, Hazelwood Central; and Emanuel Porter, McCluer. At 12:30 Adam Prahlow and Ryan Tucker will be among the Lutheran North boys to compete in Class Two.
