Florissant Valley’s Santana Lowery Wins 2 NJCAA Indoor Track Titles

St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley has a National Junior College Athletic Association Indoor Women’s Track & Field champion in Santana Lowery as she won two events.

On March 7 at Texas Tech University, a Big 12 Conference institution in Lubbock, Tex., Lowery, a freshman from Starkville, Miss., won the 55-Meter Dash and 200-Meter Dash. Lowery won the 55-Meter Dash in a national-record 6.7 seconds, surpassing the 1991 mark of 6.75 seconds set by Juliet Campbell (Barton), Barton County. Lowery had set an ATC record 6.8 seconds on March 6 as she finished first in the preliminaries.

Lowery won the 200-Meter Dash with a 23.46-second effort in the finals after qualifying first in the preliminaries with a 23.75 effort. Teneshia Peart, a Sophomore from Canada (Lester Pearson), took third in the 55-Meter Dash and fourth in the 200-Meter Dash. Tarika Williams, a sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica, took seventh in the 55-Meter Dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash.

Florissant Valley took ninth in the NJCAA Women’s standings with 36 points. South Plains won the NJCAA Women’s title with 139.5 points.

In NJCAA Indoor Men’s Track & Field Florissant Valley was 16th in the final standings with 14 points. South Plains completed an NJCAA Women’s-Men’s sweep by winning the Men’s title, scoring 163 points.

Terrel Cotton, a sophomore from Warrensburg, was second to Barton County freshman Alonso Edward in the 200-Meter Dash. Blake Austin, a sophomore from South Boone County, took ninth in the 1,000-Meter Run. Florissant Valley took third in the Men’s 4×400-Meter Relay and ninth in the Men’s Distance Medley Relay.

The Outdoor Track & Field season for Florissant Valley will begin April 4, 10 a.m. at Washington University’s Bushyhead Track & Francis Field. Flo Valley does not have a home field but will have two meets close to home, Washington University and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, April 25, 11:30 a.m. at Ralph Korte Stadium & Bob Guelker Field.
