City of Ferguson Responds to the

Ferguson Commission Report

Ferguson City Council members along with Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III, issued a statement Tuesday offering appreciation “the hard work and dedication” of the Ferguson Commission which released its final report, Forward through Ferguson: a Path toward Racial Equality, on Monday at a press conference

Commission by interviewing hundreds of community stakeholders throughout the metropolitan area, which included Ferguson residents and many of its business owners.

During the past year, the City of Ferguson has made sweeping changes to its Municipal Courts, city ordinances and community policing as it establishes efforts that are positively reflecting change in attitudes and actions, the city statement read.

City officials maintain that many of the recommendations outlined in the commission’s report have been implemented by the city this past year. The following were listed :

• Improved relations between the Ferguson Police Department and local residents through the implementation of a Citizen Review Board.
• Improved relations between the Ferguson Police Department and city youth by establishing the Police Explorer Program and the Explorer Fire Program. Both departments began working this school year the Ferguson-Florissant School district to recruit members.
• Concerted efforts to increase minority hiring within all City of Ferguson departments to create a diverse workforce that is more reflective of the community.
• Improved municipal court operations focused on ground breaking reforms which included an order by Judge Donald McCullin to withdraw all arrest warrants issued before December 31, 2014 and an order changing the conditions for Pre-Trial Release.
• Providing and securing financial support in the areas of grants, loans and other funding sources for West Florissant business owners to ensure economic success. The city has also completed a Great Streets project in partnership with the City of Dellwood, St. Louis County and East-West Gateway Council of Governments to develop a master plan for the West Florissant Avenue Corridor Project.
