The city of Florissant and Old Town Partners will host the dedication of a plaque in honor of the late Don R. Zykan, Sr., Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 5:45 p.m. The plaque will be unveiled on the sidewalk in front of the Old Town Florissant Market Place, 525 rue St. Francois. This is the 23rd Walk through History plaque honoring those who have made a valuable contribution to Florissant. The plaque dedication will precede the start of the third Wednesday Night Out festivities “Tropical Island Street Party” held between 201- 297 rue St. Francois (Stems Florist to Bunkers Tavern).
Don Zykan, Sr. co-owned Zykan Bros. Solid Waste with his brothers Ed and Joe. Their Florissant-based business was founded in 1932 by their father, John M. Zykan. In 1951 Don married Florissant native Grace Ebbesmeyer and they raised five children. Both served on the boards of many civic organizations and had a passion for philanthropy. His priorities were Family, Friends and Community Service and his mission was to give back and help others. “If Nobody Can – Zykan” was their famous family motto.
