Ackerman, Northview Schools Won’t Start ‘til Aug. 31 Due to Construction

By Jim Wieners

Two schools in the Special School District, Ackerman (Elementary level) and Northview (High School level), both located on Derhake Road, will start school two weeks late (Aug. 31) because inclement weather delayed finishing construction of the new Northview (High) School. The old Northview, just west of the new Northview, was demolished last May, according to the Special School District web site report.

This also affects Ackerman, which is just south of Northview, which also had construction work on a new entry way to administrative offices, classroom additions and a new gym. All construction was part of Proposition S, passed by St. Louis County voters a few years ago.

The Special School District of St. Louis County, which was established in 1957 and began operating classes in the fall of 1958, opened its first special education building, Ackerman School, in 1961. Today Ackerman and Northview High serve students living in the Ferguson-Florissant, Hazelwood, Jennings and Riverview Gardens School Districts.

Meanwhile, all other Special School District Schools including North Technical will start classes on Aug. 17. North Tech, located just east of Ackerman and Northview on Derhake Road, is one of two tech schools operated by the Special School District (the other is South Technical in Sunset Hills). North Tech is the only Tech High School that enrolls full time students who are eligible for athletic team particpation at that school. North Tech also has part-time students while South Tech has only part-time students.

Thanks to Prop S. North Tech has new gym bleachers and a reconstructed all-weather track with  street lights surrounding it.
