Lutheran Church of Good Shepherd Celebrating 50th Anniversary

The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Oct. 11 and a reception at the Hazelwood Community Center. A celebration service with be held on Sunday, Oct. 12 at Good Shepherd at 10:45 a.m. with Bishop Marcus Lohrmann as guest preacher. A family bible study will be held at 9 a.m. led by Brian Robison.

These events end a yearlong jubilee celebration. Over the past year, good Shepherd has hosted many events to lead up to the 50th Anniversary. The church has participated in both Florissant and Hazelwood festivals and hosted a Revival in July 2008. Additionally, the church has held numerous services and events that brought together past and current members to share in the celebration.

Good Shepherd was begun in 1958 as a mission, and was served throughout its first 41 years by its founding pastor, the Rev. Arthur Strege. Good Shepherd’s current pastor, David Swan, was called in March 1999.

The congregation’s first worship service was held at that time 819 Riderwood, Hazelwood. That basement was the location for almost all meetings for the first three years, though a few meetings were held in the homes of some of the members of the congregation on October 5, 1958.

Good Shepherd primarily serves the Hazelwood/Florissant communities in the greater St. Louis area. Currently Good Shepherd’s ministries include a co-operative preschool serving about 50 three and four year olds, a junior hand bell choir, plus choir and hand bells for adults. The congregation also employs two part-time youth leaders to re-emphasize its ministry to Junior and Senior High youth.
