Win Season-Opening Tourneys

McCluer North Boys Basketball returns to Troy-Buchanan High after spending eight years at St. Francis Borgia Regional High School in Washington.

McCluer North Girls Basketball made their first stop to Clayton to play in a four-team round robin.

Both teams won tournament. In fact, McCluer North picked up where the Stars left off back in 2009, by winning at Troy Buchanan. McCluer North won four tournaments before leaving Troy. Title number five came in the Stars’ return trip back.

McCluer North opened their return to Troy, for their 48th annual Tourney on Nov. 26, with a 70-59 win over Wentzville-Holt. The Stars dominated in three quarters of the game — first, third and fourth — outscoring Holt 57-3. Four seniors scored in double figures for the Stars, including Patrick Evans (19 points), A’Tavian Butler (16), Aaron Daniels (12) and Mekai Ray (10).

On Nov. 29, McCluer North won 68-63 over Columbia Rock-Bridge as the Stars, after leading 36-29, outscored Rock Bridge 22-16 in the fourth quarter. For the second game in a row, four seniors scored in double figures including Ray (22), Butler (13), Evans (12) and Steve Lee (10).

McCluer North won the Troy Invitational title Nov. 30 with a 70-62 win over Francis Howell. The Stars dominated the third quarter by outscoring the Vikings 25-6. Butler led the Stars with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Lee scored 13 and Ray added 12.

McCLUER NORTH GIRLS won the Clayton Round Robin by defeating Ritenour 57-17 on Nov. 26, McCluer South-Berkeley 45-40 on Nov. 28 and Clayton 51-39 on Nov. 29.

After the Stars led 47-17 lead in the fourth quarter against Ritenour, the Mercy Rule went into effect, meaning the rest of the game went on a non-stop clock while the Stars outscored the Huskies 10-0 during the Mercy rule. Samya Johnson scored 19 points, junior Michelle Owens added 17 and junior Kiera Sutton added 14.

McCluer South-Berkeley led 12-7 after the first quarter over McCluer North but the Stars outscored the Bulldogs 21-8 in the second and third quarters as Sutton scored 16 points. The Stars led the host Greyhounds 38-24 after three quarters and coasted from there as Johnson scored 15 and Owens added 12.
