Hazelwood Police Conduct Sobriety Checkpoints in May

The first of several high-visibility sobriety checkpoints to be conducted by the Hazelwood Police Department this summer is scheduled for the weekend of May 22. In addition, saturation patrols will supplement these checkpoints. Funding for the effort is supplied by a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division.

Hazelwood Police Chief Gregg Hall said, “Our police officers will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers during the crackdown and they will arrest anyone caught driving drunk. Every year, about one-third of all motor vehicle deaths involve one or more impaired drivers or motorcycle operators.” In 2014, 191 people were killed and 640 seriously injured in traffic accidents in Missouri that involved at least one substance-impaired driver.

According to Chief Hall, “Research has shown that high-visibility enforcement like sobriety checkpoints reduce drunken driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. By joining this nationwide effort, we will make Hazelwood’s roadways safer for everyone. We will continue to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice to drive sober.”

“Driving drunk is simply not worth the risk, so don’t take the chance. Remember, we will be out in force and we will be watching, so drive sober,” said Chief Hall.
