Saturday Hazelwood West caps homecoming week with a football showdown at 1 p.m. as the 4-0 Wildcats host the 4-0 McCluer Comets in a rare mid-season battle of unbeaten teams.
Hazelwood West is coming off what may have been their biggest win ever in last Saturday’s 28-14 home decision over Hazelwood East, a team the Wildcats have rarely beaten. That comes one week after a 53-0 wipeout of Northwest Academy of Transportation and Law (St. Louis). “Our kids have been playing with a lot of heart,” said West head coach Keith Herring
McCluer is coming off wins over Riverview Gardens, 14-0 on Sept. 13 at Riverview, and Jennings, 27-7 last Saturday at McCluer. Comet head coach Joe Henke said the 4-0 start is due to the Comets being “able to run the football. We can throw the ball enough to keep the opposing defenses from jamming the line of scrimmage and our defense plays tough.”
After Saturday the Wildcats, who will be playing their fourth straight home game this Saturday, play the next four games on the road including non-conference games the next two Fridays against Francis Howell Central and DeSmet while McCluer returns home next Saturday to play Hazelwood Central.
HAZELWOOD EAST AT McCLUER NORTH-SATURDAY, 1 p.m. — East, who had won Sept. 13 at home over Hazelwood Central, tries to rebound from their first loss (3-1 overall) for interim coach Mike Jones. “We got out played and out coached” by Hazelwood West, said Jones. “McCluer North is playing better (after starting 0-2).”
McCluer North is 2-2 after wins at Columbia Rock Bridge, 32-7, and at Pattonville, 27-10. McCluer North head coach Jim Schottmueller said the Stars defense played real well the last two weeks and the offense last week played well except for the last two minutes of the first half. As for Saturday against East Schottmueller said “We got our work cut out for us.”
ELSEWHERE — Friday at 7 p.m. Hazelwood Central visits Jackson, Mo.; Trinity Catholic hosts St. Dominic while McCluer South-Berkeley visits Affton. Saturday at 1 p.m. Riverview Gardens visits Ritenour while Lutheran North hosts Lutheran South
HAZELWOOD CENTRAL (3-1) rebounded from their loss to East with a 35-15 homecoming win over Ritenour. TRINITY CATHOLIC (1-3) is coming off losses to Cardinal Ritter, 40-2, and St. Mary’s, 21-13.
McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY (4-0) has Suburban East Conference wins over Jennings, 12-7, and Clayton, 28-17. RIVERVIEW GARDENS (2-2) is coming off a 58-0 home whipping of Soldan last Saturday. LUTHERAN NORTH (1-3) is coming off losses to Cahokia, Ill. (48-6), and Priory (25-7).
