At a recent City Council meeting, the City of Hazelwood recognized several of its own local heroes who made a team effort to save a person’s life at the St. Louis Outlet Mall. Two members of the Hazelwood police force, Officer Matt Edsall and Officer Todd Greeves, received the Life Saving Award and five other individuals were given the Chief’s Certificate of Recognition.
On Aug. 21, Edsall and Greeves were assigned to the St. Louis Outlet Mall. Hazelwood dispatcher Angela Pingel received a phone call on 9-1-1 from someone requesting emergency assistance in front of Cabela’s. The caller was frantic and upset, but Pingel managed to calm down the individual in order to obtain the precise location of the incident and determined it was a medical-related emergency.
Edsall and Greeves immediately arrived on the scene and found the victim in a vehicle. She had gone into cardiac arrest. The officers removed her from the car and laid her on the ground. They then began performing CPR on her. Within a few minutes, two paramedics from the Robertson Fire Protection District, Carey Palermo and Dan Cantrell, joined them at the scene and took over treating the patient. The paramedics used a portable Automated External Defribrillator (AED) to re-establish the heart rhythm and administered medication. Once the patient was stabilized, the Robertson paramedics transported the woman to a local hospital where she later recovered from a near fatal event.
During this situation, Officer Scott Schnurbusch and Officer Mike Monticelli arrived at the scene and provided back-up assistance. They attended to the victim’s family member, who was understandably panicked and scared, and kept the crowd at a distance. This allowed Edsall and Greeves to focus their attention on the medical emergency.
Because of the immediate action of Edsall and Greeves, the victim’s life was saved, which is why they received the Life Saving Award. Due to their direct assistance and team work, Schnurbusch, Monticelli, Pingel, Palermo and Cantrell were all given the Chief’s Certificate of Recognition.
