Hazelwood Central Wins Parkway West Boys Basketball Classic

By Jim Wieners

Hazelwood Central Boys took a year to avenge a 44-41 loss to Lafayette in the Ameritime Classic, hosted by Parkway West at Missouri Baptist University, in Town and Country.

They met again last week in the championship game of the same tournament at the same site, although the tournament name aparently was changed to the Parkway West Classic. This time Hazelwood Central defeated Lafayette and this time the score was 49-45.

A 21-11 fourth quarter was key for the Hawks in their win over a Lancer team that won last year. The Hawks trailed most of the time although Central led Lafayette 18-17 at halftime. No three-point shots were attempted, Marcus George led all scorers with 16 points while Xavier Sneed added 15, making seven out of eight free throws.

Hazelwood Central defeated Tourney Host Parkway West in the Semifinals, 51-46 in overtime as the Hawks outscored the Longhorns 5-0 in overtime after two teams played a tight four quarters. Sneed scored 19 points to lead the Hawks while Steve Holloway added 12. Parkway West’s Wyatt Yess (that is his last name) led all scorers with 21.

The Tournament’s opening round was an easy rout for the Hawks compared to the close semifinals and final against West County teams. Central steam-rolled over Gateway STEM 81-28 as the Hawks led 69-18 after three quarters and the nonstop clock via mercy rule went from there. Sneed led all scorers with 21 points while Dominique Dobbs added 16.
