Branson, MO is getting another tourist destination. Construction is set to begin soon on Ballparks of America. The facility will feature two-thirds replicas of some of the most prominent Major League Baseball stadiums of past and present.
Youth teams will have the chance to field one off the Green Monster or play in Tiger Stadium, Wrigley Field, the new Busch Stadium and others. The facility will initially host 24 to 48 youth baseball teams for tournaments throughout the year, but the developers expect those numbers to increase dramatically.
Hamilton Chang is the developer behind the project. Chang, the father of four youth baseball players, was frustrated by the lack of “destination” youth ballparks. He designed Ballparks of America as a way to give youth baseball the landmark facility he felt it deserved.
The venue will include on-site dormitories for the youth teams, retail shopping and fan experiences found at current major league baseball facilities in addition to the stadiums. The $24 billion project will be built at the former site of Factory Merchants Mall, a location owned by the City of Branson. The grand opening is expected to take place in May 2015.
