Holiday Events begin with Shop Local Saturday, House Tour Nov. 30

Holiday Events Still Set to Go

While all eyes and ears were focused on the grand jury decision in the Michael Brown shooting and the riots that followed Monday night, some annual holiday season events might seem in jeopardy.

Area schools, some businesses and city government buildings were closed Tuesday. The events Monday obviously will have an effect on local holiday spirit, but for now (asof Wednesaday) most organizations and groups are set to go. Holiday events in and around the area will be featured weekly in this newspaper until Christmas.

   Florissant has two consecutive weekend events, which are annually held this time of year. Historic Florissant, Inc. will host its annual Christmas House Tour on Sunday, Nov. 30 from 2-6 p.m. and includes several historic homes and the most requested sites such as St. Ferdinand Shrine and the St. Peters House. Three private homes will be featured for the first time (for details see page 6), Some shops were planning to be open on Sunday.

Shop Local Saturday (is a new national day the day after Black Friday that encourages people to patronize the small businesses in your community. The Greater North County Chamber of Commerce started a Shop the Chamber First campaign this week (see page 10 for more information).

The second Florissant event is Saturday, Dec. 6. Old Town Florissant retail establishments will be open on Saturday, Dec. 6 for Christmas in Old Town. Events include children’s activities with a visit from Santa, cookies, hot cocoa, seasonal music, and the annual tree lighting at 5 p.m. at City Hall. Be sure to   see next week’s Dec. 4th paper, which will feature a section on all the specific Christmas in Old Town activities.

   Ferguson’s Northern Lights and holiday parade was planned for Sunday, Nov. 30 with activities at Victorian Plaza followed by a lighted parade.. The likelihood looms for cancellation. The city should have an announcement this week through social media and press releases.
