McNair fifth-graders and good friends Marissa Carter and Ria McGowen took a different route to school last Thursday morning. Not only a different route but also a different mode of transportation.
Around 8 a.m., a fire truck from the Hazelwood Fire Department pulled up to their homes and blew the horn. The special transportation was a part of an award for the girls’ winning essays on fire prevention.
In October, members of the Hazelwood Fire Department visited area schools to teach students about fire prevention. The fire department then asked the students to capture what they learned in the form of an essay. The teachers narrowed down the list of possible essay winners and sent the finalists to the fire department to select the winners. In addition to a certificate and patch, the winners also received a ride to school in a fire truck.
Carter says she forgot about her special ride to school until she heard the distinctive horn blowing outside her home.
“My mom had to tell me to hurry up and I had to run to put my shoes and coat on because I almost forgot about it,” she said. But riding to school on a fire truck is one they will remember for a long time. And the arrival too. Their classmates braved the biting cold to welcome the winners to school with cheers and a group hug.
“We felt like rock stars,” said McGowen, then giggled along with Carter.
Other essay finalists from McNair are: Dexter Johnson, Megan Coleman, and Krista Foelsing. McNair Elementary is a part of the Hazelwood School District.
