Due to continuing unrest in some areas of Ferguson, and in the interest of the safety of students and families, all schools in the Ferguson-Florissant School District will be closed Monday, Aug. 18. Jennings School District also announced that schools will be closed on Monday, Aug. 18.
Information have received from officials on the scene late Sunday evening has contributed to concerns the Ferguson-Florissant had about children walking to school or waiting for buses on streets impacted by this activity. Debris on the roads that could impact transportation, and continued disruption affecting our students and families in the area, were also listed as reasons for not opening school on Monday,
“While our teachers, principals and administration are eager to welcome our students back to school and to begin the 2014-2015 school year, the safety of students is our primary concern,” a press release from the district stated.
Following the unrest in the Ferguson community Sunday night and Monday morning, the Governor has called for the National Guard to report to Ferguson. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, the Jennings School District also cancelled classes on Monday, as the district officials felt some possible initial early morning traffic issues and they dind;t want to encourage students to walk to school this (Monday) morning as a result.
All 11 and 12-month Jennings Distric employees were to report on a delayed 8 a.m. schedule and schools will be open and accessible on Monday to staff members who need to access their classrooms in preparation for Tuesday
A Jennings spokesperson said the district s anticipates school being open on Tuesday, August 19t. “We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we ensure conditions are as safe as possible for our students to travel to school given the issues occurring in the neighboring community.” the statement read.
