Hendel’s Seeks Expansion of Restaurant for Full Bar

BY CAROL ARNETT

One of Florissant’s favorite restaurants is planning an expansion. Ed Bennett, owner of Hendel’s Market Café, came before the city council Monday night at a public hearing about his request to build an addition to the restaurant.

The 700-square-foot addition would extend from the west side of the building along St. Denis Street. “It will encroach into our outside dining,” Bennett said, but will not take up all the outside dining space.

Bennett said the extra space would allow the restaurant to have a full bar. “We only serve wine and beer now,” he said. He said the restaurant has never had a full service bar because they did not have the space for a large bar.

But Bennett added that the restaurant was not trying to turn into a bar. “We want this so we can be a full service restaurant,” he said, noting that the restaurant closes at 9 p.m. now and may stay open until 10 p.m. after the addition is built. The bar will allow people to have a place to wait for a table or meet friends for dinner, he said.

Bennett said the addition would be built using old bricks salvaged from buildings slated for demolition. It will have a fireplace on the west side, and a piano. “Some people would like to go to a quiet place, with piano music, to talk with their friends,” he said.

The council held a first reading on the bill approving the addition.
