Hazelwood Central Sweeps Class 5,

District 5; NCCS Wins MCSAA

For the third year in a row, Hazelwood Central Boys and Girls Basketball teams won Class Five District Titles, including this season when the Hawks sweep District Five titles     last week at Hazelwood Central Field House.

Hazelwood Central Boys and Girls defeated Ritenour (Boys 71-38, Girls 70-6) and Hazelwood West (Boys 54-41, Girls 63-46). It was the 20th District title for the Boys since 1982 and the 14th District title for the Girls since 1983. Adding the Hazelwood High’s 1962 Regional title (while on now Dunn Road) the Hawks won 21 District or Regional Boys titles.

Hazelwood Central Boys shared the Suburban Conference Yellow Pool title with Webster Groves (each 5-1) The Hawks lost 59-47 Feb. 18 to the Statesmen, which lost 72-69 Feb. 27 to Rockwood-Marquette

In defeating Ritenour for the second time this season (86-50 on Feb. 7) the Hawks played 13 men and 10 scored, with 17 points from senior David Roberts leading the way. The Hawk women used more players (10) than Ritenour scored points as senior Jakayla Kirk (19.3 points per game) nearly tripled the Huskies total scoring with 17 points.

Against Hazelwood West the Hawk men did not play the Wildcats this season but in the Class Five, District Five Final the Hawks, with 15 points from Jonathan Dunn, outscored the ‘Cats 36-25 in the second half, after leading 18-16 at halftime. The Hawk women went 2-0 against the “Cats (64-40 Jan. 13) and took over in the second half of the rematch, outscoring West 39-22, after the game was tied 24-24 at halftime. Kirk scored 30 against the ‘Cats and made all 11 shots from inside the three-point arc.

Hazelwood Central Boys took a 17-10 record including a four-game win streak to the March 11 Class Five, Sectional Three game against CBC (19-7) at St. Charles West and the winner plays against Fort Zumwalt North or Francis Howell High in the State Quarterfinal Saturday, March 14, 7:45 at Lindenwood University’s Robert Hyland Arena, St. Charles. Central’s Girls took a five-game winning steak and 18-9 overall record to the March 11 game against 16-11 Parkway Central at St. Charles West and the winner plays Saturday, 6 p.m. at Lindenwood against Fort Zumwalt West or Troy-Buchanan. Saturday’s winners advance to the Class Five State Tournament, March 20-21 at Missouri State University in Springfield.

   NORTH COUNTY CHRISTIAN High School Boys Basketball won the Missouri Christian Schools Division One State Tournament, Feb. 13-15 in Joplin. NCCS won the 2008-2009 MCSAA title with a 24-1 record. NCCS defeated The Daniel Academy (Kansas City) 63-36 on Feb. 13, Kansas City-Blue Ridge Christian 51-42 Feb. 14 and Columbia-Christian Fellowship 58-52 on Feb. 15. NCCS went to Dayton, Tenn., for the National Association of Christian Athletes March 4-6 and went 0-4 to finish 20-8. Senior Cameron Thomas led the Crusaders with 25 points against Christian Fellowship and 15 against Blue Ridge Christian, while against The Daniel Academy junior Aaron Rice scored 13.

   HAZELWOOD WEST defeated McCluer North (Boys 62-58, Girls 63-46) in the Class Five, District Five Semifinals at Hazelwood Central. Hazelwood West Boys avenged a 62-56 loss Feb. 25 as junior Rashuan Riley led the ‘Cats over the Stars with 15 points. West Girls defeated the Stars for the second time (50-44 Feb. 25) by taking a 43-21 lead through three quarters as senior Mykel Mathews 21.1 points per game) led the ‘Cats with 27 points. Against Hazelwood Central senior Darius Cooper led the 13-13 Boys with 20 points while Mathews, 21 points, and sophomore Na’Lani Williams, 12 rebounds, led the 12-10 Wildcat Girls, which outscored the Hawks 19-11 in the second quarter.

   McCLUER Boys Basketball won the Suburban Red Pool title with an 8-0 record, three games ahead of McCluer North, Ladue-Horton Watkins and Eureka. However, after a 65-43 Class Four, District Seven semifinal win over Parkway North, the 22-5 Comets end their season with a 42-37 loss to St. Dominic in the Class Four, District Seven final March 7 at St. Charles High, despite a 14-0 run and a 16-point lead.
