Suicide Prevention Awareness 5K Run In Memory of Haz. West Softball Player

The City of Florissant Parks and Recreation Department and the Florissant Youth Advisory Commission will host the 6th Annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Fundraiser on Saturday Sept. 20 at St. Ferdinand Park in Florissant. This event has been put together in the loving memory of Alex McArthur.

Alex McArthur tragically took her life in March of 2007. Alex was a student and member of the softball team at Hazelwood West High School. Devastated by their loss, her family and friends came together to raise awareness for suicide prevention and suggested that the Youth Advisory Commission host a fundraiser to support the cause. This will be the Fundraisers 6th year and will include a softball tournament, 5K race, 1 Mile Fun Run, silent auction, and BBQ.

Lead by an experienced runner, a runner group will start from scratch and build up skills and endurance in order to run in the 6th Annual Suicide Prevention Awareness 5K Race

Participants will meet Monday/Wednesday from 7- 8 p.m. starting July 28 at various parks in Florissant. Meeting locations will be emailed out prior to the first day. The price is $50 includes registration for the Suicide Prevention Awareness 5K Race.

Last year’s event had over 500 participants overall and was able to raise over $3,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This year the City of Florissant Parks and Recreation Department has enlisted the help of Fleet Feet St. Louis to provide professional chip timing for the 5K run. 100% of the net proceeds will be donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
