Despite Not Winning State Hazelwood Central Receives 4 MSHSAA Trophies

Hazelwood Central was able to take home four Missouri State High School Activities Association trophies during the 2013-2014 school year, for finishing in the top four for each sport, however Central was not able to win a state title nor could they finish as runner up.

The two Track And Field teams were able to have the highest finish as the Boys and Girls teams each finished third in Class Four. Boys Track And Field had won four straight state titles (2010-2013) prior to this season while Girls Track And Field was unable to repeat as state champions from last year. Football season ended in the State Semifinals for the first time after winning 15 previous semifinal games including 1972 won by Hazelwood High. Boys Basketball was able to finish in fourth place.

Hazelwood Central Boys and Girls Track And Field teams won the Suburban North Conference Relays and both won Class Four, District Three. Hazelwood Central Boys Track And Field shared the Class Four, Sectional Two title with St. Louis University High.

Hazelwood Central won three Girls state championship events as Ashley Henderson won two of them individually, the 100-Meter Dash and 200-Meter Dash, while the Hawk ladies won the 4×100-Meter Relay beating McCluer North, the Class Four State Team Champions (see related story) Central won two Boys state championship events as Marcus Davis won the Class Four 400-Meter Dash and the Hawk men won the 4×800-Meter Relay.

Hazelwood Central Football (12-1) saw their hopes of making their 16th State Final game end at Columbia-Rock Bridge on a lost fumble at the Bruins’ five yard line in the game’s final minute of a 36-33 Hawk loss in the Class Six Semifinals. Rock Bridge, second to Blue Springs in Class Six State, scored the game-winner with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard Logan Twehous to Logan Reuter touchdown pass.

Hazelwood Central opened the season with last-minute touchdown passes to defeat Webster Groves and DeSmet, whom the Hawks also won in the Class Six, District Two semifinals. Hazelwood Central won 26-24 over CBC in the Class Six, District Two Final. Hazelwood Central won the Suburban North Conference title.

Hazelwood Central Boys Basketball (25-7) won twice over Ladue, McCluer North and McCluer and lost twice to Columbia-Hickman including the Class Five Semifinals as Hickman took second to CBC. Hazelwood Central won Class Five, District Seven, the St. John Vianney Jerry Boeckman Classic, the Meramec Holiday Tournament and the Suburban North Conference title and was second to Lafayette at the Ameritime Classic

Central Wrestler Khial Jamison won the Class Four 170-Pound State Title, the Hawks’ first since 2002. Girls Basketball won Class Five, District Seven and Girls Soccer won Class Three, District Two.
