Hazelwood Central Four-Year Track Title Streak Ends, Finishes Third

By Jim Wieners

There will not be a five-peat in Class Four Boys State Track And Field as Hazelwood Central ends up with a third-place finish May 31 at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.

Blue Springs, who finished second to Hazelwood Central last year, won the Class Four State title with 83 points, 39 better than runner up Lafayette (44), 41 better than Hazelwood Central (42) and 48 better than fourth-place CBC (35). Blue Springs win not only ended Hazelwood Central’s four-year streak of state titles but also ended a five year streak of Class Four Boys Track And Field titles won by a Hazelwood District High School as Hazelwood East won in 2009.

Both Lafayette and Hazelwood Central medalled in three relay events but individually Lafayette had five individual medals to three for Hazelwood Central. However, Hazelwood Central won the 4×800-Meter Relay (7:47.55) over second-place Lafayette (7:47.73), Hazelwood Central was second in the 4×400-Meter Relay (3:17.36) while Lafayette was third (3:17.51) and in the 4×200-Meter Relay Hazelwood Central was third (1:28.57) while Lafayette was sixth (1:28.98).

Senior Marcus Davis won the 400-Meter Dash in 47.07 seconds while senior Brandon Chunn was third in the same event (47.92 seconds) and junior Tabais Knight was seventh in the 300-Meter Intermediate Hurdles (40.32 seconds). Leading the way for Lafayette was sophomore Dylan Quisenberry, winning the 80-Meter Run (1:54.54) and was second in the 1,600-Meter Run (4:11.7).

McCLUER finished ninth in state with 25 points but took home a state champion in the 4×200-Meter Relay team running in 1:27.37. McCluer was third in the 4×100-Meter Relay (42.61 seconds) and fifth in the 4×400-Meter Relay (3:22.11). Junior Henry Davis finished sixth at 200 Meters (22.34 seconds) and junior Raequan Stallings finished seventh in the 100-Meter Dash (11.15 seconds).

HAZELWOOD WEST had two medallists as senior Lens McKeown, with a 14-foot Pole Vault, finished fifth while sophomore Isaiah Cole was seventh at 400 Meters (49.48 seconds).

IN CLASS THREE McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY finished in fourth place with 38 points just one ahead of fifth-place Warrensburg (37) Grandview and Liberty North shared the title with 64 points each while Festus was third (49). One key to McCluer South-Berkeley taking home a state trophy instead of Warrensburg may have come May 30 when MS-Berkeley’s arch-rival Jennings won the 4×800-Meter Relay title (7:57.06) over second-place Warrensburg (8:01.25).

McCluer South-Berkeley had no state champions while Warrensburg had one winner; Alex Burson won the 1,600-Meter Run (4:16.41). McCluer South-Berkeley was second in the 4×200 Relay (1:28.91), third in the 4×100 Relay (43.18 seconds) and the 4×400 Relay (3:21.29) and sixth in the 4×800 Relay (8:08.84). Junior Tuvone Clark was third in the 300-Meter Intermediate Hurdles (40.30 seconds) and sixth in the 110-Meter High Hurdles (15.07 seconds), senior Donovan Ayers was sixth at 400 Meters (49.33 seconds) and seventh at 200 Meters (22.62 seconds) and junior Michael Miller was eighth at 400 Meters (49.53 seconds).
