McCluer North Hosting 8-Game Midwest Showdown Shootout Dec. 14

Four North County high schools including three from the Florissant Valley area plus two from Alton, Ill., and two from St. Charles County will play in an eight-game Midwest Showdown Shootout, the seventh annual event organized by Terrell Ramey, that will be held this Saturday, Dec. 14 at McCluer North High School.

The Shootout will raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Hazelwood East, one of the Florissant Valley area schools, opens the shootout at 10 a.m. against Whitfield then one of the two Alton schools, Marquette Catholic, takes on a South St. Louis Catholic High School in St. Mary’s at 11:30 a.m.

Next, two St. Charles County teams hit the floor for the next two games as St. Charles High battles Ensworth at 1 p.m. followed at 2:30 by Fort Zumwalt North against Plainfield East (Ill.), then two North County teams play in the next two games as Jennings plays at 4 p.m. against Willard and then another Florissant Valley team hits the floor against an Alton school at 5:30 as Hazelwood Central plays Alton High. Finally the top two games of the Shootout take place as CBC meets Bentonville, Ark., 7 p.m. and host McCluer North collides with Chicago-Morgan Park at 8:30.

TRINITY WINS VALLEY PARK INVITATIONAL— After going 1-2 last year in the Valley Park Invitational the Trinity Catholic Titans won the title for the fourth time in the last five years and defeated Priory for the second time in three years. Trinity defeated Principia, 62-38, Confluence Prep Academy Charter, 75-67 in double overtime, and defeated Priory, 51-50.

Sidney White scored 47 points in the three games of the tournament, averaging 15.7 per game, made eight three-point shots and connected on 13 out of 17 free throws. Keith Dockett had 11 assists and had seven steals while Quinton Ward pulled down 32 rebounds, averaging 10.7 per game, while blocking four shots.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL WINS VIANNEY-BOECKMAN INVITATIONAL — Wintry weather delayed the final round of the St. John Vianney-Jerry Boeckman  Invitational until last Monday, Dec. 9, and in the championship game between Hazelwood Central and Ladue Hazelwood Central won, 56-51. It was over a year after Central took third place the last two years after winning it seven years in a row.

Prior to the championship final Hazelwood Central defeated Clayton 65-47 and Belleville West (Ill.), 70-40. It was the fourth year in a row Hazelwood Central played Belleville West in the semifinal and this year’s win by the Hawks avenges two straight losses to the Maroons after Central won in 2010.

In the first two games of the Boeckman Invitational Demarco Buchanan averaged 18.5 points per game (a total of 37), made five shots from three-point range and had seven steals. Marcus George pulled down 22 rebounds (11 per game) and blocked eight shots while Quaron Gooch had nine assists.

NORTH TECH THIRD AT WINFIELD — North Technical took third place in the Winfield Tournament by defeating Warrenton, 64-45, losing to O’Fallon-Christian, 92-86, and reportedly won by forfeit over Northwest Academy of Law. University City won the tournament. North Tech individual stats were not available.

HAZELWOOD EAST 1-2 AT TROY/HOWELL TOURNAMENT — Hazelwood East took fourth place in the Troy-Buchanan/Francis Howell Tournament. East opened the tournament by defeating Elsberry, 68-54, and then lost to Fort Zumwalt South, 62-54, and Westminster Christian Academy, 70-55. All three games played by East were at Francis Howell.

Jordan Henderson scored 35 points in three games, an 11.7 average, pulled down 15 rebounds, five per game, and blocked four shots. Jimmy Jones has 16 steals, 5.33 per game, and Diondre Worthy has 14 assists, 4.67 per game.
