Sacred Heart Kindergarten Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Sacred Heart Kindergarten in Florissant is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Kindergarten begun in the fall of 1964.

The celebration will be held Sunday, Sept. 29 with a 9 am Mass followed by an open house in the Kindergarten Building. A reception (coffee, lemonade and donuts) will be held in the Parish Hall from 10 to noon. Guests are invited to visit the Kindergarten Garden just a short walk across the street.

The Kindergarten began during a time when the local public school districts decided to close Kindergarten because of budget needs. Fr. Ed  Schlattmann, a strong believer in education, received permission from the Archdiocese to open a Kindergarten in the old school building.

It has flourished ever since and has an enrollment of 149 children in the 3 year old “Lucky Ducks”, Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten for the current school year. The Kindergarten boasts a new coat of paint throughout the building, thanks to a grant through True Value Hardware’s partnership with True Value Foundation’s “Painting a Brighter Future” program. The kindergarten building was painted with 40 gallons of paint to refresh its learning environment.

A “thank you” plaque listing the names of those who donated to the new window fund has been hung in the Kindergarten.

More than 40 current and former teachers will be on hand to visit with their former students, parents and friends in the Parish Hall. Graduation pictures, yearbooks and other memorabilia will be on display in the Parish Hall. For more  information, call Mary Kay Gladbach, 314-409-9478.
