Harvestfest Undergoes Make-Over With New Activities & Entertainment

No Parade this year, But Radio Disney Added

Refreshing new activities and entertainment have been added to this year’s Hazelwood Harvestfest, making it bigger and better for the whole family.  The event will be held on Saturday, Sept.  14, at Howdershell Park, 6800 Howdershell Road, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Instead of having a parade this year, Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division is partnering with Radio Disney to bring Disney family fun to the park from noon to 2 p.m.  The station’s high-energy Road Crew, consisting of an Emcee, DJ and choreographers, will be on hand to teach kids of all ages dances to popular Radio Disney Top 40 tunes, lead them in fun-themed trivia games, and pass out cool Disney giveaways to almost everyone.

Other New Activities Added

Harvestfest Scavenger Hunt – Want to make $500 in one hour? The Hazelwood Parks and Recreation is giving away a $500 Grand Prize and several other prizes to the top three finishers of the Harvestfest Scavenger Hunt. The City’s annual fall festival will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with a ONE hour long scavenger hunt in the park.  Individuals and teams of up to four (4) people are invited to scavenge through the park locating and collecting as many items from our list as they can in one hour.  First-, second-, and third-place winners will be announced during the Miss Hazelwood crowning ceremony which starts at 10:30 a.m.

Gypsy Rose III Landship – Arrgh matees and scallywags!  Kids can come on board, wear a pirate hat and carry a toy sword as they defend their ship and explore the seven seas for lost treasure.  This pirate ship is one of six built by 53-year-old Capt. Tim Woodson, a pirate river cruise operator, for land use.  With its skull-and-cross bones flag flapping in the air, this ship has cannons that shoot big Nerf sponge balls and has ropes for kids to swing on.  Capt. Woodson uses his unique ships to take people on about 200 pirate cruises each summer on the Mississippi River from St. Charles to Grafton..

The Bubble Bus – Thousands of bubbles will be seen floating over the heads of fairgoers when The Bubble Bus cranks up its bubble machines  from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m..  The magic occurs when all sorts of devices are used to make bubbles of all sizes.  A  Gypsy Rose pirate ship and the Bubble Bus were two popular attractions at the Valley of Flowers Festival in May.

Baseball vs. Football

For young athletes in the family, this year’s Harvestfest will offer a Home Run Derby, starting at 11 a.m., and an NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition from 1 to 5.  Both events are free and open to boys and girls in the following age groups: Home Run Derby (ages 7-12) and NFL Punt, Pass & Kick (ages 6-15).  The NFL event is being used as a precursor for the new NFL Flag Football program, sponsored by the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation.  To lean more call Jake Junghanel at 731-0980.

A late addition to Harvestfest will be the appearance of The Rams Street team and Rampage, the team’s mascot.
