Custodians OK 7-Hour Day
Move will Save Jobs For Many Custodians
The Hazelwood School District (HSD) custodial staff recently voted and approved a measure last week to switch from an eight-hour workday to a seven-hour workday in an effort to protect custodial positions after the recent budget-restructuring announcement. The close to unanimous vote will allow custodial staff who would have been affected by the recent budget cuts to keep their positions with full benefits.
“This is fantastic news,” said John Hasse, director of custodial services for HSD. “By switching from an eight hour day to a seven hour day, we are able to keep all of our custodial personnel while still helping to save the school district money.”
The idea of moving to a seven-hour work day was led by Steve Muehling, executive board business representative with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and custodial union representative; in collaboration with Julia Burke, HSD associate superintendent of human resources, Dwight Lindhorst, assistant superintendent for finance and facilities, and John Hasse, custodial director.
