Due to the June 1st power outage, Hazelwood’s 10th ‘Annual Community Art Fair and Used Book Sale has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 20, at the Hazelwood Community Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  To coincide with this event, Hazelwood CERT is hosting a Blood Drive on the same day at the same location from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Both events are open to the public and offer free admission.

The Hazelwood Community Enrichment Commission has been hosting the Community Art Fair on a yearly basis over the past decade.  One of the commission’s many responsibilities is to support the arts in the City of Hazelwood and to encourage residents to form an appreciation for artistic expression.

Local artists, age 16 and over, will be displaying their works of art using oil, watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, pastels, and pencil.  Each of them will have up to 10 art pieces on display which will be submitted as entries in a contest featuring these four categories: Landscape/Still Life; Real Life; Fantasy/Science Fiction; and Abstract. Cash prizes, along with blue, red and white ribbons, will be awarded to the top winners of each category.  In addition, they are allowed to sell their artwork to interested parties once the contest judging is completed.

Hazelwood’s Community Art Fair attracts artists from all parts of the St. Louis area, including members of the Northside Art Association who meet regularly at Prairie Commons Public Library in Hazelwood.  Last year, Kathy Mallones Simon of St. Peters, Mo., won the first-place blue ribbon for the Artists’ Choice award since her painting titled, “European Adventure,” captured the most votes cast by the event participants.  Simon has been painting for about 30 years. Her painting was based on a breath-taking scene she saw in Europe.

In conjunction with the Art Fair, the Commission will be hosting a Used Book Sale offering a variety of hardback and paperback books at bargain prices.

Since maintaining an adequate blood supply at all times is crucial to a region’s readiness to respond to an unexpected disaster, the Hazelwood CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is partnering with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center in hosting a Blood Drive on July 20 at the same location.

A Hot Diggity Dog Special is being offered to each person who registers and donates blood.  The package deal includes two free tickets to the River City Rascals game on July 29 at the TR Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon. Those who go to the game will be admitted to the “Dog Pound” where they can get food and beverages as well.

Individuals who plan to donate blood that day should be in good health and eat well as well as hydrate before they arrive at the event site. They also need to be at least 17 years of age and bring a photo ID for verification purposes. In addition, donors cannot give blood if they’ve already done so later than May 25, 2013. There are two ways to register for giving blood. One is to go online at www.bloodcenterimpact.org and use sponsor code 10247. The other is to call Steve Rahmberg, Hazelwood CERT’s secretary, at (314) 921-4762 to reserve an appointment time.  Walk-ins on the day of the event are accepted as well.
